Output shaft flange fretting wear

Propeller flange fretting wear, anybody fix it?

I pulled my 616 motor & tranny, found fretting wear on one of the bolts & the output flange of the motor. The bolt was necked down to ~70-80 % diameter, the hole in the flange is enlarged & out of round. Can't grab a picture right now.

I work w/ a former weld process R&D engineer. I'll probably have him fill the hole w/ weld and then redrill using the driveshaft flange as a template.

Any better ideas?

I think you might be better off finding another flange. I do believe from what I have read in some other threads, that the flange from an automatic is the same. that is if you use one from a diesel vehicle. the gassers use a larger flex disk.

The bolt you are refering to, is one of the flex disk bolts?

It is not worth trying to repair.
I assume that you are referring to the flange on the back of the trans & not the crank flange !!

Friend of mine has worked as chemist, engineer, inventor, mechanic & engine builder. Says 2 good holes will locate, good clamp pressure & preload will keep joint together & develop needed friction. New set of bolts came w/ my new flex disk, call me curious. Should be able to monitor the joint by checking bolt tightness- if it relaxes a new flange is indicated.

Used flanges are $40 @ sun valley MB dismantlers they rebuild MB trannys in the western desert. Looks like the hard part would be getting the crimp out and finding the monster 12 pt to pull & replace the flange.

I had to replace the flange on the old iron box 4 spd in the 240. I pulled the driveline to have the U-joint replaced. when I pulled it off the tranmission end, noticed the flange all wobbly. thought the nut had come loose, and borrowed the socket from my Indy. this one uses the old style nut. placed a socket between the flange and the trans case, and with a 18" braker bar it came right off. the staked part will straighten out and come off.

The splines on the shaft were good, but the flange splines were all worn to a point. used a flange from a spare trans and it`s nut, and torqued it down. the new used nut lined up in a different place to be staked.
