603

Bought a complete 603 engine out of a 87 300 d from pick your part, odometer said 150k miles , just finished compression test all cylinders over 410 psi , should i bother to check main or rod bearings? my cost was $200 plus $50 core , looks good so far , i can tell head has been removed , its a #14 head, but i have a #22 head to put on if needed.

That's a darn good price!

It can't hurt to pull the pan while you have it out. It's easy enough to check the bearings so why not? I just completed an engine replacement using an '87 300D engine, with a reported 140k miles. The bearings and crank journals literally looked brand new.

I would pull the pan. but all the work will be done then. look in the pan for debris. if there is shavings of metal, it does not bode well for the bearings.

Odometer readings are almost always questionable on early mercedes. If by chance the car really apeared to have just the indicated milage. I would just install it other than changing the front seal if wet.

Perhaps cleaning the engine up first and the engine bay when the other engine is removed.

Thumbs up

Reseal it while it is out of the vehicle.
