If there is significant wear on the gears, that will wear into the new chain and shorten it`s life. so they should be replaced also.

I had the chain replaced at 269K, and at 331K it came apart. that is when I bought my Metric engine. Mike at metric, said not changing the gears can/will cause the failure.

344k on original chain. I had it checked at the dealer last year and they said it looked fine and put in an offset key to correct 6 degrees of stretch.

The teeth on the gears of all of our engines are still sharp and perfect....no signs of wear even on my engine with 317k........the synthetic oil I have been using the past 100k+ seems to have paused the engine's wear/aging process.

I would be more concerned about the vacuum pump than a timing chain. Of course the same thing applies to the vac pump as far as oil change frequency (or the lack thereof) is concerned. A bad bearing on the vac pump can take out the chain, cam, and other parts (I have first hand experience). Also, replacing the chain with a good quality one is essential. Phil @ Fastlane sells IWIS brand, and I have heard they are about the best. Also, DO NOT use the master link (sometimes not provided) permanently on the chain. It is only used to connect the new chain to the old while feeding it in. A chain press is needed to crimp the permanent link provided. I bought a chain press especially for the job, as the chain I replaced was connected with a removable master link (it had obviously been replaced previously, and a crimper was not used).

I have heard this "DO NOT use the master link" before. Do you know why? Does it not hold up well?

The chain I replaced that had the master link, had the plates of the master link worn to an oval shape. I am sure it would not have lasted much longer, had I not replaced it along with the chain.
Here is the thread about the timing chain:Broken camshaft: 617 '81 SD. How could this happen?

Before the overhead cam diesels, ALL the MB gas and diesel engines were indeed gear trains. So all early 260D, 170D and early 180D engines were like this.

I have about 9 of them rummaging around the garage and two in running cars-- OM636 engines.

Truck diesels, I can't say but I believe early ones were also gear driven, I think the cranes might still be.

Use synthetic and you'll never need to worry about the chain or guides.
