I think not. The SD has a deep depression in the bracket with some holes. The problem remains.

I saw a 81 NA at a salvage yard a yr or so ago that had a sanden on the PS-maybe bolted to a york mount,
but that wont work on a Terbeau Deezl
This sounds friggin' amazing

Well it all looks very similar to my 300D I must say - thanks for the pictures folks - I too am trying to remember what the heck I did to change the belts on mine...

...unfortunately it has been so long since my car has been in one piece and I've done some normal maintenance...

...but I get the feeling that perhaps I took off the pulley at the water pump as I'd already junked the viscous fan.

Now please don't go off on a how will you ever get through the desert without a mechanically driven fan where I live I probably need a cooling fan about one day in every five years!

Here are some pictures of how the front end of my car looked before I ripped it to bits

Hmm...
I just remembered, I successfully changed all the belts in a customer's 85SD a few years back... I do not remember any difficulty in doing so, but I also replaced his alternator at the same time... his was a late model 85, with the center tounge hood release tab, not the older design SD, of a push tab on each side of the grill.. perhaps they changed something on the newest 85?

Finished this Wed. after I got the parts. It's tight in there, but I think this shows the U.S. W123 okay:

And here are the PS pump bolts. The 2 closest to the block:

So long as you dont turn the car off with the battery run down, a bad alternator is a non-issue.

I drove all the way from DC to NJ (150ish miles) in twilight, with no alternator due to a bad brush. No big deal, though the lights were dimming at the end.

Hey fellas. I few years back, my wife and daughter took a trip to Columbia, SC in my late 85 SD. I got a call at 8pm from my wife, saying that she noticed the temp gauge was pegged and she was in construction stop and go traffic on I85. "What should I do?" she says.

It took me an hour to get tools, a trailer, and belts, another 2 hours to get to them on the side of the road, and another 30 mins of construction detour HELL to pick them up from where they walked to.

I simply loaded the car on the trailer and drove us all home - extremely aggravated. The next morning, I found that the Alternator bearing decided that the ball bearings looked better outside the races than inside.

I rebuilt the alternator, put new belts on, and changed oil and filter. I also busted the radiator upper tank inlet, so the radiator had to be retanked.

The belts were all replaced. Aside from the aggravating location of bolts, belt replacement was fairly painless. I think it took me around an hour to complete belt replacement, aside from r and r of the alternator. I did not have to remove the fan, and all brackets had enough adjustment/movement to make components loose enough to work with. My alternator bracket has a hole in the top also, like previous pics show - not like Brian's. My 1985 300D also had the same setup as my SD, so I cannot attest to the ease of replacement on older 617's.

The belts were easy, but cost me around $350 in parts, fuel, etc.
BUT the learning experience was priceless. I learned to never let any females in my family drive MY car too far
