Motor mount - DIY for 240D

New mounts may be here tomorrow. Anyone got a link to a good DIY? I did them myself about 15 years ago and I have the service manual, so I'm sure I can get through it, but I'm certainly not opposed to reading up on some good tips for doing the job and of course looking at photos.

Not so fast.

I ordered my mounts yesterday and while I was doing some other stuff on the 240D, I figured I'd crawl under it and loosen the bolts for the mounts. Right side broke free just fine. Then when I get to the left side, I find the hole plugged with the disintegrated mount. After cutting away the rubber to get to the bolt, I find that the mount has shifted with the mount's disintegration and is not quite completely accessible through the access hole. My thought is to Dremel away enough of the metal to get clear access to the bolt. I wouldn't have to do but about an eighth to a quarter inch on one side of the hole. Does that sound like the best solution?

If you lift the engine a little with a jack you may be able to gain more access to the head of that bolt.

When doing the mounts, nothing more than the engine shock needs to be disconnected correct?

less than an inch of lift above the thickness of the brand new mount will give you the clearance that you need to get the new mount in place. I've been able to leave the shock attached in the past times i've changed the mounts on mine.

Still fighting a bit with the mounts. Got the right side done without too much issue, but the engine side bolt on the mount is giving me trouble on the left side. I think I need to remove the engine shock to raise the engine a little bit more to get enough access to it. There is also a little bit of concern about the power steering line running right next to the mounting arm. Hopefully that won't be an issue.

For those who asked or for those who want more info about the Lemfoerder mounts that I bought and whether or not they are in fact the same as the Mercedes provided product, see my post along with some photos here - 240D Lemfoerder motor mounts

Finished the job today. Unscrewing the engine shock did the trick. The left side mount was really disintegrating. See attached photos. The power steering line that I was concerned about was not an issue.

Should the engine mount and tranny mount be replaced at the same time?
