Help with Vacuum system..what did I do?..'85 300td
1985 300td
I was poking around under the hood last night (mainly in the area near the injection pump), where there is coincidentally a bunch of vacuum lines which I had to shove out of my way. Now, the car won't stop when the ignition is turned off, the door locks don't work, and the transmission shift a lot "tighter": sometimes it feels fine but other times it shift at too low of speed and the rear end kinda "thunks". Everything works fine in the HVAC system but the lower vents aren't blowing any air now either. I looked at all vacuum lines the best I could (without getting under car) and noticed a few unplugged, but plugging them in didn't fix anything. Any ideas on what I may have done?? Thanks in advance.

With that many problems I'm thinking you may have cracked the main line from the vacuum pump to the brake booster. How are the brakes?

Then start working your way downstream from where vacuum branches off from the main line from the pump to the booster and find the disconnected line or broken fitting.

Well I found the disconnected connection and all the issues were resolved (ignition, locks, lower vents). However, I also found (or may have disconnected while looking) another vacuum line, which I'm fairly certain went through the firewall into the area under the dash. It is now disconnected...however everything (that I know of) seems to work fine....hmmm?? As always thanks for the help.

That's a vent.

You know...come to think of it, you may be right. The center dash vents have never really blown at all...I just always figured that how they were supposed to be. I couldn't find any disconnecting lines to plug it into after looking for a few minutes, so maybe I'll just let it be...I really don't like working up under the dash, not the most comfortable position. Thanks for the help.

Center vents only blow on AC. If it's a black line, it's the vent.

OP: I think your misunderstanding, When Kerry says that black line is a vent, he means for the vacuum system. It isn't supposed to connect to anything. He doesn't mean it controls your vents.
