My cruise control is possessed!

So this has been happening for a while on the 300SD and I can't figure it out.

Basically what will happen is that when I set the cruise, I'll feel the actuator take the "weight" of the pedal, but then it will sometimes floor the accelerator then release it, floor it, release it, floor it, then keep it there till I intervene. Or it'll "pulse" or "stab" at the accelerator or not engage at all. Then other times it will work flawlessly.

I have no idea what the hell is going on with this thing... any insight?

mine was still doing that after i replaced my amp and had actator tested from gdl. i found it to be high resistence to ground in the brake circuit for the cruise shut off. it was a problem with the wire harness. i wired around it and it worked for a while but i am still having issues. i also don't know if ur system is the same as mine.

i would do all test on gdl website

I have had great success with an audiovox aftermarket unit. CC-100 kit. Installs in about 2-3 hours, and if you are obsessive like me you can even solder/rig it to the existing stalk for a stock setup. It uses vacuum + electric. I've got about 25,000 miles/4 years on mine and it still works flawlessly every time....it never flinches. Cost is far far below trying to get the stock system functional....and probably lasts much longer.

My stock cruise used to do the same thing, and recently started doing that on our 300E also, I unplugged the actuator/servo for safety.

Too bad I drive a lot of highway for several hours at a time usually... I'd like cruise to work.

I got talking to GDL and they figure my amp is dead. So I'll see if I can scam one out of a car at Pick n Pull.

Thanks,

Looks like the OE cruise retrofit is just problems waiting to happen. I'll look into the CCS-100 and use the OE stalk controls.

i'd be wery of used amps from the picken pull. i bought 2 used ones on ebay and they worked but only for a short time, just do it right the first time so u don't wast ur money whick ever way u go. like i stated earlier i repalce my amp with a gdl unit and they rebuild my actuator also and it worked for along time but i believ im having wire harness issues now.

Cool. My cruise is similarly messed up -- I think I'll take a look at the Rostra system since I don't want a vacuum system (more to break). Good writeups/links!
