New horns for the 300D

I impulse purchased these from amazon (free prime shipping!)

They come with a 12v relay, I remember wiring my w123 300D for an aftermarket horn and using the relay but is it really neccessary? I viewed a few youtube vids of subaru owners just wiring them to the stock setup (looks similar to ours, 1 lead from the car harness is hot, the other is ground)

Ideas?

You probably don't have to use an extra relay, but they will probably work better with it.

I have those on my TDI, I love them.

How so will an extra relay help?

How loud are they. 118 db seems like its loud on paper.

You need to trick it out with the factory dual tone horn switch:

They are nice and loud. A tad louder than the stock horns on my SDL.

An extra relay will help them hit "harder" right at first... when they first start sounding there's a huge inrush draw. If the wiring can't quite do it quick taps of the horns will be weak. An extra relay will "clean up" the short beeps.

Hook them up to the stock wiring and try it out. If they don't sound properly when you do a short tap of the horn pad, add the 2nd relay (with nice thick wires).

That is pretty much what I did for the w123. I used 16 gauge wire.

Ill be putting these in tomorrow. May go with the relay idea. I'll wait until I have the wiring diagram

You'll love it with the relays. My W201 has the same aftermarket horn as the one in my 300D, but the 300D is relay'd. Ultimately, I would relay the W201 eventually, but in stock form it works great. The aftermarket horns I have are Bosch FSA2 supertones, at 300Hz low tone and 375Hz high tone.

I'm just trying to figure out the wiring on the car end. When I did the w123 all I did was install a toggle switch and kept the stock horns so I just spliced into the wire for the horn pad and installed the relay. This may be slightly different.

How about a few details about them? Construction? Cost?

I need a new horn for the Dodge van and most of the aftermarket crap is good for about two years until they fail. I hate just tossing out money.

Use the original wiring at the front of the radiator, install the relay in a protected area (none to get wet) and route the wiring back to the horns.

The relays (I used one per horn) in mine are in the black box on the driver fender (in the W123), out of sight.

TheDon 04-21-2012 01:04 PM

I could do that. Cool. Do you know if the w124 horn switch is grounded or connected positively?

Mounted and wired to the factory harness for now. I just need a wiring diagram of the car end and I'll switch it to a relay.

Uberclean install

I really want a fanfare horn with the switch. But are they really that much louder or just different sounding?

116's are still the best but they don't have many factory switch locations.
