SD fuel economy challenge

This thread is dedicated to fuel economy on the 300SD.

Don't even bother to comment on the thread unless you own one of these vehicles.

If you do, and you want to participate, here are the rules:

1) You must refill the tank four consecutive times with a minimum of 10 gallons per fill.

2) You must post your four consecutive fills with gallons, miles traveled, and the date of the fill.

3) You must verify that your odometer matches a set of roadside markers for a distance of 20 miles. Post the difference between the exact 20 mile figure and your own odometer. As an example, the SD reads 20.03 miles at the 20 mile mark (it has an electronic speedometer calibration unit).

The above rules will eliminate those that manage one high figure due to improper fueling or a single road trip. It's the most legitimate data to determine true combined fuel economy.

I'll be posting my own figures after one more tank.

Just filled my SD yesterday at 353 miles traveled with 15.1 gallons on level ground (as this can make a large difference). About 160 miles of it was highway.

That is a mpg of 23.37748344370861

My odo is very accurate, I've measured it against both mile markers and GPS many times. On a 75 mile trip vs GPS it will be at about 75.2 or so the last time I compared.

Bosio injector nozzles with about 90k on them at this point.

I don't feel like digging out receipts but my '86 SDL has been getting 20-21 mpg since I bought it from dawtwo. It doesn't matter how hard I drive it or if I'm using the AC. The gauge cluster was calibrated by pros (and is accurate to my GPS navigator) and I fill up at the same pump at the same station most of the time.

Try e-bay instead. I believe you will see about a 15% improvement over the CL numbers.

... my 82 or the 85 will participate in this survey as soon as I can save up enough funds to fill the tank...

Sure, if you've got the patience.

I consider myself to be the king of that endeavor, however............I don't exceed 62 mph with the SD and do a lot of coasting.

I expect to post results that will crack 30 mpg in mixed (but primarily highway) miles.

I did hypermiling in my SD during college for a while and would usually get between 28 and 29.5mpg, mostly city.....eventually gave it up as I only drove about 80 miles a week, so the savings on a monthly basis were pretty minimal.

Highest ever for the SD was 31.4 going 50-55mph for about 340 miles in the UP of Michigan.

Were these all highway miles going 60mph or less, no wind or steep grades, EGR blocked, fresh air filter? What was the air pressure in your tires?

About 15/85 ratio city/highway. 62 mph (occasionally 65) on highway. Minimal wind. No grades. No EGR. Existing filter (about 30K on it). Tires are 35 rear and 32 front, Michelin Pilot Exalto A/S. 2.88 differential. IP timing on spec. 6 oz. Powerservice in each tank (for the past four years).

Speedometer verified and calibrated to highway road markers (and confirmed on more than one roadway).
