W124 early-to-late ashtray retrofit - electrics? - 87300td
I've searched around for this info, and If I missed it, I'll take my lashings. You can skip to the question if you don't need the background;
Background: I managed to bust my early (25 year-old) ash tray plastic in an attempt to refurb its spring mechanism, no matter, I bought a late w124 ash tray for cheap. The early one looks more appropriate for the car but I appreciate how nicely over-engineered the late one is. But the wiring is different. The early one has a female plug in-console for the lighter, and a separate wiring for the attached light, also in-console. the late ashtray has a single female plug that comes off of the ashtray itself, with the light and its wires contained in the body of the ashtray. Question: Anybody know what to do to get a late 124 ash tray's electrics to work in an early 124? Thanks, -haven |

I don't quite get your description of the plugs... sorry. I do remember though that my cigarette lighter has a 2 prong (vertical/horizontal) female plug plugged into it. Not so sure about where the light gets its power though...
IF the newer unit just uses a single female plug to power both the light and the cig lighter, then I imagine it's just a simple matter of getting the right female plug and splicing from there. The trigger for the light may be independent from the plug. positive to positive ground to ground.

I have both, and the newer one uses a small socket, the older one is a larger plug connection. I have not tried to merge them yet, but I would like to.
