I guess the question should have been, will the operator run away?

They can. You don't want to be there when one does!

That's a common issue with Detroit's that have sat a long time. First thing to do is remove the valve cover and make sure the control rack is free before starting the engine.

There is also a butterfly on the blower to shut it down.
Very few bother to lube the cable.
I have shut one down with the butterfly.
Had to reach in & twist the leaver on the blower.
Otherwise put into top gear, brakes on hard & take foot off clutch.

Scares the C**P out of you when they start on full throttle & just keep winding up.

I love how the old man just calmly walks around the truck, sticks a board on the intake, then gets a rag and chokes it out... I wonder what he was doing in the truck the whole time it was running away? likely trying choke, or something in the cab to kill the motor...

2 stroke GM's are ok with starting fluid.
They dont have GP's & dont have much compression.
many need it to start properly & not belch white smoke for some time.
I believe its even recommended in cold conditions.
We have been using it here for over a decade on a couple of GM's in earth moving gear.

You would think that anyone with half a brain would have something handy in case of a runaway when starting a diesel for the first time in years.

You would think.

.
Crikey that would scare me to have to reach in and do anything when the engine is singing away like that.

Layback, you need to take a video camera to some of that earthmoving gear someday.

I love the old mans reaction of just walking up calmly with the 2x4 after the kids had ran away in fear
