1985 300D 123 Auto Trans to Euro gasser 5 speed?

I guess we all want to have the ultimate car. For me that would be a 123 300D with a turbo and a 5 speed manual transmission.

What I now have is a leaky automatic transmission which I'm about to remove and reseal and replace. However, I've lately been trolling Craigslist and have found a somewhat low mileage 5 speed euro gasser 200. (a picture of the shift know showed 5 + Reverse) Hmmm... This might make an interesting conversion.

With the MB plug and play units (transmissions / engines / etc) that can be combined in a myriad of ways, is it possible to take a low mileage gasser W123 5 speed transmission and transplant all of the goodies into my '85 300D? I would assume that I'd need to get the entire drive shaft, transmission, clutch, flywheel, clutch slave / cylinder, brake sled clutch pedal assembly... anything else? Has anyone done this? What were the things you had to modify / adjust to get it to work?

After you made this change, did the speedo read correctly... i.e. at 60 mph was it really going 60? (as timed at 60 seconds) Or not? Is there a speedo gear change required?

Nope, the gassers are usually m102 which aren't the same bellhousing. I'm assuming it's a newer aluminum one where the bellhousing is cast into the body of the trans.

Seems you have an idea of the other issues. Driveshaft/linkage length might need altering. The speedo will work fine.

Yes a 200 would be a m102 and the starter hump would be on the wrong side for a 617. If this car was a Euro 280E with an M110, then this would be a perfect swap as everything behind the flywheel could be swapped in without any issues.

The above is assuming it is a late model 123. There may also be an early euro 200 gasser. there was an early 200 diesel 123 for sure.

My M103 has a 5 speed. It was slightly popular with W201's.

I had that configuratin with a Peugeot: 2.5 liter turbocharged diesel with a 5 speed. I thought it worked great!
