Mine has a transmission cooler as standard and its completely separate to the radiator - might be easier to look at replacement parts from the later models such as mine to then retrofit, although it might be simpler to get a thermostatic Mocal cooler.

This exact event has caused many transmissions to fail in the early 2000's C class series.

Water to oil coolers are more efficient, and have the added advantage of being automatically thermostat controlled. I think a better plan would be to replace the radiator with a high capacity aluminum racing radiator with an integral transmission cooler.

not on my MB - but I put it on a mazda 6 that I recently bought, its plumbed after the radiator ATF cooler, before the additional cooler I was seeing transmission temps reach to 220F, now they are at 180F in the worst heat on the highway or city traffic without issues at all.

Anyone have a recommendation on where to buy the MB trans cooler? Are they still available?
If they are not available, any recommendations on what to use? I see several options on ebay... Not sure which to purchase? Thank You!

the water to oil cooler in the radiator is very efficient - water will remove upto 5 times more heat than that of an air/oil cooler. Instead of relying fully on just the air unit - plumb it in series - the outlet of the radiator cooler should enter the air cooler and go back the transmission. If you are going to fully rely on the air cooler then the fan and 100C switch is almost mandatory.

If you are looking for an inexpensive alternative, many/most/all of the AT F-series Ford trucks since the 1980s have coolers mounted in front of the radiator. Easy to pull and usually inexpensive at salvage yards.
I have one mounted between the frame rails of my 56 Dodge/OM617 truck. So far, so good! 1956 Dodge Truck Build with OM617 Thermostats to bypass the cooler until the trans is warm are available. Here is a pic of my cooler from a F-150. Larger ones are available on F-series models built with higher towing capacities. |

I guess I'm just cheap, but why pay $150-200 when you can get essentially the same stacked plate cooler off of a Ford truck for $15 at a salvage yard?
