Check your throttle linkages
I think I made a similar post a while back and, of course, I neglected to follow my own advice for a long time
My 81 240 was getting more sluggish, with even less get up and go than normal. So I finally did the "throttle pedal to the floor and check the throttle stop under the hood on the IP" trick. Not even close to touching. A few minutes adjusting things closed the gap Woo hoo, feels like 20 more HP

Sure hope you were always heading downhill with a tailwind before the adjustment!

It was a struggle just getting up my driveway let alone accelerating ahead of traffic.

if you have a 86+ 124 (and maybe others?) also replace those plastic throttle ball joint end links with the older metal style from a 123.
i had a plastic throttle end crack on my old 87 300D and allow linkage to pop off at 75 mph and it jammed into the intake manifold, effectively holding throttle at about 75%. I realized it when a minivan suddenly pulled out into left lane in front of me, i hit coast on cruise stalk nothing happenend, thought thats odd, hit coast again, nothing again, hit coast and held it down hard then finally slammed on brakes while engine kept chugging. Thanks bean counters at MB in 1986.

You should also check to ensure that all of the little balls are secured in their receiving sockets. I was driving the 240D a few weeks ago on a freeway and stepped down on the accelerator and got no response. Fortunately, I was able to pull off onto the shoulder and pop the ball into the socket in the linkage which was no longer connected. I was back on the road within a minute. (whew!) I was showing a potential buyer the car and this was not an opportune moment for that to happen! (oops!)
