I got this by email today from a non car guy friend. He said it would be built in China and sell for $600. I said I doubted it would sell for that little. Anybody know the truth of it?

Your friend is a bit off on the pricing

, the car is 660 pounds in weight and this is a old story, from around 5 years ago.

"Pricing is expected to fall somewhere between €20,000 and €30,000 ($31,400 to $47,100). Assembly is tipped to take place in VW's prototype shop, which can produce 1,000 cars per year at full tilt, reports CAR."

And the real world MPG will probably be about 25.8 MPG!

the report says they actually got 264mpg in testing the vehicle for the article...

top speed of 120kph... what's that? 55? 65? IIRC, 100 is 55mph...
should be like driving a motorcycle as far as visibility to other vehicles on the road...

Volkswagen XL1
The XL1 is the third iteration of the Volkswagen 1-litre car, unveiled at the 2011 Qatar Motor Show. The diesel plug-in hybrid prototype is branded as a "Super Efficient Vehicle" (SEV).[12]
According to Volkswagen, the XL1 can achieve a combined fuel consumption of 0.9 litres per 100 kilometres (310 mpg-imp; 260 mpg-US)[13] and CO2 emissions of 24 g/km. Like the L1, the XL1 uses a two-cylinder turbo-diesel. Displacing 800 cc, it is rated at 35 kW (47 hp) and 121 Nm (89 lb-ft) of torque and transmits power to the rear wheels through a seven-speed DSG transmission. The electric motor pitches in with 20 kW (27 hp) and 100 Nm (74 lb-ft) of torque, and can work in parallel with the diesel or drive the car independent of it. Fully charged, the XL1 can travel up to 35 km (22 mi) on electric power.
The XL1 has a curb weight of 795 kg (1,750 lb), and a drag coefficient of 0.186 (a similar drag coefficient to the General Motors EV1 electric car). Just 23.2% of the car (184 kg (410 lb)) is made out of either steel or iron; the drivetrain weighs 227 kg (500 lb). The XL1's length and width are similar to the Volkswagen Polo, with a length of 3,970 mm (156.3 in) and width of 1,682 mm (66.2 in). However, the car is much lower with a height of only 1,184 mm (46.6 in), and has a coupe-like roofline, reducing interior volume. The design incorporates gull-wing doors,[14] with the interior seating layout using a staggered side-by-side arrangement similar to a Smart Fortwo, rather than the previous versions' tandem seating.
Performance credentials include a governed top speed of 158 km/h (99 mph), with 0–100 km/h (0-62 mph) acceleration in 11.9 s.[15][16]
In February of 2012, Volkswagen confirmed that it would build a limited series of XL1s starting in 2013[17] .

I like the looks of it... it's as fast as our older diesels and gets WAY better milage.. I would buy one if available. Sad thing is, we are able to build cars like this, but you will never see one that you can actually buy... they want to keep us at 30mpg cause there is no money to be made at 260mpg...

That's a lot better than the earlier concept. Still don't think it will play nice with SUVs. Can we use this on a bike path? Affordability?

That'll be popular with cyclists! How many times do you think it could be hit with a D-Lock 'till it broke for good? Stick with the SUVs it'll be safer!

I don't know what the future hold for us here, but back in Europe you could by FIAT Punto with 1.3 diesel engine, giving you 60MPG (US) any day of the week

You have all the small French diesel cars as well plus I drove last summer the 2011 VW Polo 1.4 TDI, I really, really liked it. If they bring it over here I would buy one on the spot. Feel like a normal car in term of space on the inside plus 65MPG in real world driving.
