Dipstick grommet replacement? How?
W123 1984 300D
The grommet that holds the oil dipstick tube in place is shot. How do I replace it? I thought that without the grommet, the dipstick tube would move out the "U" bracket, I would slide the grommet down down the tube, then slide the grommet and tube back into the bracket. But mine does not move out of the bracket. The "U" bracket seems to be too narrow to let the tube move out of it.

On my 617, the O-rings fit on the oil dip stick. Which O-ring are you referring to ?

This is at the top of the dipstick tube. It is not at the bottom of the tube where it fits into the oil pan.
At the top (near the top to be more precise) there is a "U" shaped bracked that the tube fits in loosely, and there is supposed to be a grommet to keep it in place. My original engine (617.952) was replaced with 617.951, which comes from a 81 300SD. I mention this incase the U type bracket was only on the .951.

Bumping this post up.
All my searches have not found anything. I know this should be easy to replace the grommet that keeps the dipstick tube from flooping around. What am I missing? Do I need to cut the grommet and then slide it into the "U" bracket? Thanks

I just took a look at my 85 300D, and it looks like one side of the gromett is wider than the other side.
I replaced mine a few years ago and don`t remember exactly how it did it. but looking at it, I must have used some of that spray sillicone, and slipped it over the top of the tube, and then worked it onto the bracket. I had the engine out when I did it, I do remember that. Looks like the lower side of the gromett is the narrow side so it can be worked between the tube and bracket. Hope this helps. I just checked the 240 and it has the same bracket/gromett. that gromett looks to be of the same size top and bottom. If the gromett is put on the tube, and the bracket removed, is there enough room to fit the rubber through the opening of the bracket? I don`t have a spare bracket to look at. Charlie

I can't get the tube out of the bracket.
Let me take a picture and post it. That may help my explanation a lot.

Got it to fit
I figured it out. I just had to push the grommet using a wide screwdriver. I did not need a lot of pressure, just enough, and then worked my way around the grommet until all of it was fitting in the bracket. Not sure why I did not think of doing that before.
