300TD Updated pictures.
Been working away on the 300TD so I though I would post some new pictures.
It got a new windshield today. Had a full alinement done using the Hunter setup. Drives rock solid now, I love it! Thursday I'm putting in the 85 rear end I have and will be putting it the matching cluster. Is there any way to turn up the miles on the speedo to reflect my current milage? In 2 weeks is scheduled to have the headliner put in, and a 35% tint done to all the glass. Still a few things to fix, like the A/C, replace the rear window regulators, which work, but will fall over time. and complete the project from the PO of installing the window switches into the rear doors. The car is driven everyday, and has become the kid hauler. But, not for long as I'm getting my 99 E320 wagon back soon with the new trans. Once that car is back this car will be for me to drive only. |

Looks great! How much did the windshield set you back and what seal did you use? Also is that an airbag steering wheel?

The steering wheel was put on by PO. I'm shopping for a wood trimmed one to replace it. |

Looks great! Makes me miss our former 81 TD, it had similar mileage (370k miles).
Nice to see the updated steering wheel, '83 240D front seats and corresponding front seat belts. Make sure the right side corner light is fastened well!

I really like e seats, they have a lumbar adjustment in the rear operated by a strap. And no arm rest, which is perfect for me cause I never use them. Also makes getting to the kids easier. Don't make me pull this car over |

I love that, "Is there any way to turn UP the miles on the speedo to reflect my current milage?"..
only Mercedes drivers do that, everyone else would want to wind them back

I may have not put all those miles on her but to me, each is a badge of honor. It's one of the first things I point out to people...

That looks to me like a 240D speedometer. I had to put one in *MY* 300D after it's speedo began howling at me. It works ok for me but the car can go faster than the speedo can register - heh.

Thanks! I do enjoy it. Out of all the cars I have worked on it's quickly becoming my all time favorite. Not just to work on but to drive. I like the fact that when I drive it around I almost never see another one.
Off to get the 85 rear put in. |

if you read the dieselgiant thread on fixing the odometer, you will see the pot metal gear that slips on most 123's if you remove it, and take out the shaft holding the numbers, you can align them in any configuration you like. while you have the shaft out, crimp then end to knurl it, and then drive the gear back on, and it'll NEVER slip again.

Since the new Odometer is fully functional and the gear was tight I opted to leave it alone and will just make note of the current milage of both on the drivers pillar. I did however repaint the needles and clean everything up to look like new. I installed an older 2 prong tack in it that I got while at vstechs, the current tack in the car is not working, even with a new amplifier, so maybe this will solve that issue as well. The rear end swap got moved to monday morning. The lift was full with another car till then.

You are using the 85 125mph spedo with the 2:88 diff, correct? and not the 85mph spedo?
When I installed the 150mph spedo in the 80 240D, I took it all apart to clean things up and to fix the slipping pot metal gear and paint the needle. I get it all together and then put the face on and discover I got the numbers 1/2 way up in the window. I wasn`t going to take it all apart again. Looking down on top of the wheels is the shaft with the grey cogs. with a small file, file off the 2 bulges on the shaft on the left side. then pull the shaft out while removing the cogs. then you can rotate the wheels to where you want. slide the shaft back in while lineing up the cogs. To secure the shaft, I stripped off a piece of small wire insulation and slipped it on the shaft end. it fits tight and since the shaft doesn`t really spin, will hold and not cause any problems. removing the face will make it easier. lift the needle over the pin. there is a white mark on the edge of the face where the needle lines up at rest. be sure to place it back and line up with this mark. then lift it back over the resting pin. Charlie
