1982 Mercedes 300 d squatting and dipping....

My 82-300d is starting to dip and squat badly when I hit bumps in the road.

I also hear pops from rear like shocks bottom out or something.

My question is, will new shocks like Bilstein or Koni make a huge difference in the dips and swaying plus steering seems a bit harder because of all the erratic behaving of the car now.

This car is easily a 9 out of 10 in looks, inside and out and mechanically...........but it is getting like driving an old jeep with a worn out lift kit.

Of course I am going to check out all stability areas while we are doing the shock thing, just wondered if anyone has done shocks lately when it was bad and did it help a lot or a little ?

Thanks,
Revolverman.

My 300D basically didn't have shocks when I bought it. I got the blisteins and it drives like a dream now.

The bit about the steering caught my attention. What are you running for tire pressures in the rear? If I keep my car at the spec listed on the filler flap the back end is really soft and squirmy. At 32 lbs in the rear it's much nicer, doesn't overreact to bumps.

However, if steering is really being affected then maybe you need some bushings back there as well.

My car is still on the standard factory Bilsteins, which I understand are the 'comfort' spec, and I find them barely up to the job for my tastes.

You would probably want Konis or 'HD' Bilsteins.

#1 Get those suggested new Bilsteins - they work magic.
#2 Make sure your differential mount is not shot.
#3 Get the excess junk out of the trunk.
#4 Tire pressure does matter as suggested.
