Thanks for the info. Didn't want to do it in a spot that could cause damage.

An electric dual-poster failed about 15 years ago here. The mechanic was standing at his bench in front of, not under the car, with his back to it. Unfortunately the car tipped and slid forward off the lift arms right into him. He never knew happened, according to the coroner. The lift was under 5 yrs old.

I knew the guy, but not well. He had done work on my car several times. We had stood under my car, on a hoist, and chatted the week before. To this day I will not stand under a car on a hoist in a shop anymore. Best you will get is one foot under and one foot on the outside.

The shop sued the lift company on behalf of his widow and three kids and a few years later they coughed over a very large chunk of cash after doing their best to assert the shop owner had tampered with the unit by doing his own routine maintenance, to no success. The owner was able to demonstrate he did everything to spec.

i've never seen a lift like that one before... a center cylinder only? it looks like it was supposed to have some type of spreader arrangement on top, that broke off or something.
even if the guy had not moved when he did, the truck gave lots of warning prior to falling. I think I'd have had time to run away if I'd still been under that one when it began to fall.

I like the safety of a center cylinder/dual cylinder lift... but the installation is a killer!

They were very common over here back pre 1970. The ram is about 12" dia.
I had never seen a car fall off one before. I like a 4 post lift. That way if 1 leg fails there are still 3 to hold the car.
Most of the old gas stations over here have them in the 1 lube bay they were built with.
When the ram seal starts to go its a pain as they car is continually going down slowly.

Ditto here in Canada. Well into the 70s as I recall and probably later in small service stations.

What's a good place to place a jack if I want to drop the entire rear subframe?
