Smile New guy- 300cd

Hi everyone This is my 1st post and i thought i would show you my car! It is a 1983 300cd. It is kinda a 1 owner. My dad got if from his friend who bought it from the original owner about 2 months ago for my birthday! it sat for 11 years under a tarp and never ran He got it for $2500 because it looked dirty and trashed to his friend. Anyways i have all the service records, paperwork, and even the window sticker and inspection sticker from 1983! I really love it even though my friends have new mustangs and dodge rams... well here are some pics!

Talking Stuff i have done:

I have disabled the EGR system and removed all components except EGR until i get block off plates. ALDA removed. New stereo and wiring. Fog lights have there own fuse so they can run with high beams or parking lamps. New master cylinder. Painted grill black because the plastic was deteriorating and looked bad. Cleaned evaporator (with it installed). A/C compressor is being rebuilt to ensure it lasts (im not sure if it was already working because there was only a small charge). Added a manual boost controller.

Stuff that i will do soon: 150a alternator with new wiring. Hella E-codes with 80/ 100w Hella xenon bulbs. Delta HID lights for fogs. Extra bulb in rear fog lamp place for parking light. All headlights and fog lights will have relays. Boost gauge and EGT gauge that i will mount in a scrap w123 ashtray i have. If you can think of anything else please let me know, i want some input

welcome to the forum.

That is a really clean CD, nice color.

Under the black box on the drivers side inner fender, are some slots for a few more plugs for using the MB relays. remove then from PNP, cut off as much wire as you can. then when wired in they will look factory. the silver relays are 20amp. there is a green one that has a spade fuse that fits in the top and also an orange one with a spade fuse. think the green one is 30amp.

I have one for the added electric fan and one for my fog light up grade to 100W.

Great idea CHARMALU! I did score 3 relays and 2 relay sockets with the clips at the pick n pull! I was thinking about having a relay at each light and using the stock wiring as the trigger for each relay. Then the only added wiring would be a constant 12v from the alternator terminal block. What are your thoughts on that?

That would take 6 relays though LOL. i will most likely get a bunch of spade terminal type relays off a newer car at the pick n pull.

WELCOME!

you seem to be off to a great start with the car.
I agree, that's an awesome color. and you got a sweet set of paperwork with it, that's also great. there are a lot of CD specific problems detailed on here, I am sure you will find days worth of reading if you use the google search feature!
have fun and enjoy your present!

It sounds like you've got a handle on the electrics. 80/100w sounds like overkill in my opinion, but to each his own. Just make sure they're aimed correctly.

I'd be cautious about wattage in the tail light assembly, the wrong bulb can cause the sockets to overheat and melt. The rear fog in US-spec trim is also not connected to the switch, so the second detent pull doesn't do anything and there's no bulb in the amber socket (I think there's info on the proper bulb somewhere, maybe the same size as the console shifter?). You can re-wire though. I've posted the pinouts for the headlight switch in a thread somewhere, too.

Depending on how much wiring, how clean an install, etc, you could use a dual-87 pin relay and have both L/R bulbs off one relay: Datasheet

Or order a double relay for each side: Datasheet

To get a clean install possibly all the way through to the bulbs, you might want to browse Hella's plugs catalog: http://cat.hella.com/hella-nafta/jsp/search/advanced/Frameset_ButtonBar_Bottom.jsp?nologin=yes&selectedObject=CS@Hella-USA@CT@F01

The coupe also has a unique seat back lock design that runs off the vacuum. Do a search for posts from me with the word "definitive" and you'll find a custom '83 coupe vacuum drawing set.

And if your rear windows don't fully retract, you'll need to check out the "lube" post in the resources column. Don't force them before reading up on the NLA bracket for the rear regulators.

For odds-ends of coupe parts in the DFW area, Panzzer seems to find them and part them out.

Your engine bay looks really clean, but if you haven't yet done so I'd check in the hinge pockets for dirt/debris. In pic #2 post #2, that little trail of water from that black "cylindrical" thing is the output of the hood drains. I'd pull both plastic wheel arch liners and clean out in there all the way down to behind the fenders.

Likewise maybe inspect the cowl drain areas. That's your air intake for the heat and A/C. Getting those clean should help mitigate any damp or musty smells after sitting for so long. Maybe run some some string trimmer line through the sunroof drains, too.

Since you're rehabbing your A/C (with R-12 from the looks of the original low-side metal cap...) you might as well read up on the monovalve, or pre-emptively remove and inspect it for tears in the rubber. Near the battery and tranny dip stick, four screws. Likewise verifying the aux fan operation. In Dallas you'll want to make sure it works. There's LOTS of info on those topics.
