HELP new ignition tumbler nightmare

I wanted to replace my tumbler because my key was sticking sometimes. I got a new tumbler today and easily took out the old one. I mistakenly put the new tumbler in the ignition and then was going to screw on the black retaining cylinder and now the key wont turn and I cant get the tumbler out of the ignition. HELP 1982 300td

you have to take the paper clip and stick it in the hole of the new tumbler before you can screw the black ring back on. you'll see when you push the paper clip in that the little metal tab on the top retracts so you can turn the black ring (you have to have the key in the new tumbler and turn it clockwise to line up the slot on the face of tumbler with the little hole further back)

I get that but why wont the new tumbler turn easily even without the black ring? When I finally got it to turn I took it back out. Now there is no tumbler so at least I can drive my car, right?

is this a keyed mercedes tumbler or one of those chinese universal ones? if you don't use the black ring you should be able to just put the tumbler in the hole (the metal tab goes up) i used one of those universal ones 1 time and couldn't get the black ring to go on either; i just left the ring off till i got a new mercedes tumbler. it could also be that the actual back part of the ignition switch is bad (plastic broke off), take a look inside and see

... the steering lock mechanism fails on the assembly sometimes. you may need to disable it.

when I put the new tumbler in the key only turned about a 1/4 of inch. just enough to unlock steering. I finally got it to the second position and took it out. If I put a screwdriver in the ignition and push on the tab inside I can turn on the car. Im afraid to put the tumbler back in.

I'd pull the ignition switch assembly and see if it works smoothly in your hand with the steering lock pin disengaged and the electrical portion removed.

As I remember, to get the electrical plug off the ignition switch, the key has to be in the same position as when inserting the paper clip into the tunbler. (1 or 2 ?). been a while since I have removed one of these.

Really not all that difficult of a job to do, but will have to remove the instrument cluster if removing the steering lock assembly.

Remember: DO NOT START ENGINE ONCE THE OIL LINE IS REMOVED FROM THE OIL GAUGE.
