When i first got my 83 300cd i did not like the EGR vacuum mess so i decided it all needed to go! I first disconnected everything to make sure it would not affect anything else witch i did not. I also removed the ALDA and switchover valve to clean it up a bit more. Then i decided to add a small vacuum tank to the shutoff system witch made a big difference on how fast the car shuts off. The vac system had a small leak somewhere in the EGR system but nothing big and it shut off "normally" but i am much happier now!
The stock vacuum tank is just for the door locks so i does not do anything for the HVAC system or anything else. Amazing i have NO leaks now! I went out of town for a week and when i came back i unplugged the vac line to my extra tank and sure enough there was a good amount of vacuum left! Maybe you would want to do this!
