CA model indicator

I need to replace the starter in my 1985 300D. The starter for a CA model is different so I want to make sure I don't have a CA model before I move forward. What's the best indicator of having a CA model? Is it by VIN?

my vin: WDBAB33C7FA260323

Looks like its the Federal version.

What's the manufacture date on the VIN plate?

You can also look at the starter itself. If the solenoid is at the bottom, not top, of the starter, then you have a cali starter.

..

Actually the 722416 transmission is an indicator of a Cali version.

My Cali '83.....

Hi-
I thought I'd throw this in:
I just replaced the starter (again) on my '83 300D Turbo, California-sold when new, love of my life. The starter I took out the first time (the OEM starter) and the second one I replaced it with has the solenoid on the TOP of the starter. Just like the newest one I put in. Hope this helps?

Chris

I think that is incorrect. But would love to see verified information on that.

The solenoid will be on the bottom on an 84-85 version with the TrapOxidizer/TrapCat due to clearance issues.

Major indicators include: Air cleaner behind right headlight, turbo is mounted higher with associated longer header pipe, no "U" tube for turbo inlet, starter solenoid on bottom... among others

My '85 has the 722.4 transmission

looked in EPC, you have the federal version w/ 722.4 tranny. Cali version parts are greyed out for your VIN

Well that is interesting about the EPC. But really I never seen that to be the case in person with the 722.4 trans. What mach4 is describing about the Air cleaner location and the trap oxidizer would tell for sure if it is a Cali.

Double check the option codes listed from the VIN. 491 is US Federal version, 494 is California version. But who's to say the engine and transmission are original?

what exactly is different about the air cleaner positioning on the CA models? Mine seems to be in the same place as the 78 240D I used to own.

This is what an '85 Cali Engine Bay looks like.

Perhaps your engine has been replaced. Look to see if the engine serial number between engine block and oil filter housing matches the serial number listed above.

Or someone changed out the Cali manifolds and added a Federal Setup.

The Federal model has the air cleaner on top of the engine, like you mentioned your 240 having.
The Cali model has a different filter canister that sits behind the R./F headlight.
