Rant: Do you think MB could give us another freakin' 1/4" on the speedometer cable?

Damn, to get your right hand in there to slot the wire in there and hopefully thread the cable on? Arrrgggghhhhhhh!

I vaguely remember something about undoing a clip at the driver's footwell to get some slack. I'm not sure if this applies to your model.

vstech 05-15-2012 01:06 PM

which car is this rant on?

There are 1 or 2 plastic clips that hold the cable in 2 places under the car. squeeze the ends and they will pop out of the hole they snap into.

Remove the 10mm bolt in the transmission and pull out the cable. this will give the slack yuou need.

Then when removing the instrument cluster, you will have enough room to get your hand back there to remove/replace things.

This is on the W123.

It does apply to the 124. That extra couple inches makes a huge difference.

OP, please list the model of your car for more specific help.

I, uh, don't see a 124 in his sig... that he currently owns... 210? does it have a cable?

edge 05-15-2012 04:29 PM

Since I didn't see a model listed I just too a stab in the dark. I didn't bother to read the list of cars that he has and doesn't have. Besides someone will stumble on to this thread with a 124. ;)

Had my son thread the speed cable. Thank goodness for slim hands....

You can fix the clock with new capacitors? Is there a thread for that somewhere here? My clock has been at 1:50 since I bought the car.

I have had more problems with the cable hanging down too much near the gear box & getting caught on sticks or other stuff when driving off road.

pawoSD 05-15-2012 09:22 PM

You think the W123 speedo cable is bad, try attaching the W201 cable! You have to remove the drivers side vent and shove your arm into the dash through the hole.....not pleasant.

Plastic clip on the other side of the firewall. Popping that loose gives slack. Leaving it disconnected gives speedo needle bounce.

Blue plastic in the pic.
