240 gearing

I'd heard that the 240D (76 to 85) rear ends/differentials are geared lower than the 300Ds
Is this true?

you can find the numbers in a few places, i think they ranged from 2.88:1 (turbo 300d) to 3.69:1 (240d). 3.07 is another common ratio.

240D ratio is 3:69

300D NA 77 - 81 3:46

300D Turbo 82 - 84 3:07

300D Turbo 85 2:88

To verify the ratio of a Differential, scrape off the grease and grime on the lower left corner of the housing, not the cover. It is stamped in the steel.

Yeah, 3.69. I just rebuilt my diff and went to a 3.07 and it's the best thing I've done yet. I can actually hear wind noise on the highway now. Didn't loose anything noticeable off the line gained about 5mpg city and 3mpg highway. Odd, I know. The difference in highway cursing comfort @ 65 is amazing. Very pleasant, in fact.
