Leaky A/C Evaporator?
My 98 E300 is exhibiting A/C leak symptoms. I have not done the CCU diagnostics but will tomorrow.
At this point when I bought the car it provided me with cool air but not cold. I purchased some R134 and added approx 3/4 can and it blew cold. Therefore I believed that most likely there was a leak. Lasted for a couple of weeks and then was back to mostly ambient temp. Took it to Midas and they found a leak at the low side schraeder valve. Replaced both high and low valves, evacuated system, recharged with dye. Worked great for approx 2 weeks. Now back to same symptoms, but $212 lighter in the pocket. Midas rechecked for leaks and couldn't find any, even using UV light. Put car up on lift and I watched them check around trans and couldn't see any hints of a leak. Don't know for sure where drain is for evaporator. So I am on a personal journey to find the leak. By the way the static pressures were 100 psi high, 100 psi low. With engine off. With engine on and at idle no change. Midas says compressor is bad since clutch was turning but pressures remained the same. On way home cool air came out of center outlets but others were warm. I believe this is an indication of low refrigerant. In any case I have ruled out the compressor issue at this time because there wouldn't be any cool air at all. Right? I would like to trace all of the system, but I don't know where to begin. I don't even know how to find the accumulator, expansion valve, or if I can observe the evaporator coil without removing the entire assembly. I just want to find where the leak is to determine if its worth the cost of a repair. By the way Midas wants $1,550 for compressor, accumulator, expansion valve replacement, and re-charge. I believe I can do it myself with patience, and repair guidance of some sort. Too bad there's no repair manuals for these things. Any help would be greatly appreciated. |
