Electrical: Intermittent fuel guage, windows, flashers

I'm having electrical issues with my fuel gauge, signal lights and power windows. Sometimes, I'll have power and then it'll just turn off for no apparent reason. I notice it because my fuel guage just drops to empty. When that happens, my signal lights and my power windows don't work. Then, very infrequently, power will return. Power is off 90% of the time so I'm fearful of rolling down the windows.

I've checked the fuses and the plug on the back of my instrument cluster - all seem ok. I've even thumped the dash and the center console with no change - doesn't *seem* to be a short.

Are these systems tied together by that power relay?

They all share the main ground point behind the cluster. 3/4 of the devices inside the car are attached there in an enormous confluence of brown wires.

Your gauge cluster, power windows and turn signal all have a connection there. If it is loose you will have all manner of electrical issues.

I'm a controls engineer, whenever one of my control panels starts acting weird the first thing I do is check the negative/neutral side of the circuit. Almost every time that is where the trouble is.

Replace fuse 12 and clean the contacts.

Yep, did that Brian. Problem has cleared up.

I think I need to get me a new fuse box cover and laminated card. Mine's cracked.

Anyone got a good fuse box cover they can part with for a W123? Maybe with a card showing the fuse information?
