Under hood just off idle linkage pull and surging idle

Info: 1985 300D, 193k, cranks well, shifts well, runs strong. I'm under the hood with the motor running, when I pull the linkage just off the idle/resting position (1000 rpm's), I get a little surge cycle, a slight up and down in the idle speed, but as soon as I pass that point it smoothes out, but if I hold it there, it keeps surging. I'm not overly concerned about this, but I can also feel it when the a/c is on and I am accelerating from a standstill when the motor is cold (I live on a hill). Have any of you felt this, or am I dialing in on W123 aging nuance a little too much?
