Yeah I will usually use dino too unless the P/O can prove it already had synthetic in it.

For my new OM601 I am working on swapping right now I just put generic 15w40 dino in it to begin with, the old oil was scary looking. Plus when I changed the fuel filter upon dumping it I found RED heating oil/farm fuel. I guess the guy I got it from was even shadier than I thought.

If you read the Manual as to how much Oil Flows through the Oil Filter the Full Flow section of the Oil Filter seems small and inadequate.

Compare the Stock Full Flow section at about 1/3rd of the Filter length to the Baldwin P102 (Hastings LF380) Filter that has about 1/2 of the length of a Full flow Section.
The Baldwin also has the lowest Micron Full Flow section at a nominal 20 microns.

I mostly change the Filter when I change the Oil. Once in a while I get lazy or just had not ordered the Oil Filter on time to have it ready.
Typically what happens is I had been putting off the Oil Chand am way overdue for an Oil Change but my Oil level is low.

I don't want to add more Oil before the Oil Change and I do not want to wait for an Oil Filter to arrive. So I end up changing the Oil and not the Filter.

Since getting the Car I installed a By-pass Oil filter that is supposed to filter down to 0.50 nominal microns. So if I miss an Oil or Filter Change it is not as big of a deal.

As long as the Oil Return Line on the By-pass Oil Filter is hot after driving a while you know Oil is pasing through the Filter and you do not have to change it.

Which model Bypass are you using?

Again, not trying to be overly frugal - its all about fully using a resource and my guess is that our filters are probably good for at least two changes -why throw more junk in the landfill than you need to? Me? I have been wanted to install a bypass OF for a long time, need to get on this!

I have read that a filter becomes more efficient the more contaminates it catches. I have also read that there is more wear to the engine with an oil change.

why not do an oil analysis to see where you are at. may be changing the oil too often.

Well Iam off to take a shower, think I`ll turn my skivies inside out to get some more milage out of them.

Charlie
Hey Charlie!!!
Now are you going to tell us you got your skivies from Sally's & you are going to start washing your oil filters in unleaded gas & re-using them??

All filters are more efficient as they collect gunk, get plugged up.

All filters become 100% efficient when they no longer allow oil to pass through.

You will have to see the end of this thread to find what I am using now. It is something I made a Filter Housing for.
However, it is not too hard to go the route ForcedInduction did and buy a generic Filter Base with 1"x16 Threads (recheck that in the same thread) and make up your own Oil Lines.

The Autopart Chain Stores sell Oil Cooler Hose.
You do need to create a restricted fitting. Just fill a fitting on one end with JB Weld and drill a 1/16" or smaller hole into it after it has cured.

The tech problem is where to tap into the Oil and where to return it. All talked about in the thread.

The Amsoil Filter Element is about $30 but you do not need to change it until it pluggs up. That means it is going to be there for quite a few Oil Changes.

I wanted a cheaper Filter Element but found I had to exert a lot of effort to make one Oil Filter Housing for it. So I have one working example on my Mercedes.

Didn't everthing that used to make the Oil Filter come from the Earth; why shouldn't it go back to the Earth?

I dumped 1qt of waste Motor Oil (filtered through a 2 micron Bag Filter) into my Volvo Diesel Fuel just to see what would happen.
That was almost 1 year ago and my Exhaust still smells alittle from it. But, that is one way to recycle it; but not the best way.

True with fuel filters, not oil filters.

When an oil filter gets clogged the oil bypasses the filter media and is not filtered at all.

Hey Roy!
Careful or some one will get the idea of a oil filter & oil being sealed for life.
That is a very short life !!

That is true for the full-flow section. There is no such mechanism for the secondary portion of the filter (aka bypass section.) In a healthy engine, I suspect that the full-flow element would outlast the bypass element by a substantial margin.
