If that is the extent of the damage, it's just a matter of extracting the broken bolts from the balancing disc and reinstalling the pulley and vibration damper with new bolts.

What leads you to believe that your engine siezed up?

How long did you continue to drive (with an inop water pump) after the pulley failure?

That pulley on my 79 240D came adrift while my daughter was driving. she actually had the wherewithal to go back and find all the parts along the road by the time I arrived.

I was wrong to assume the engine seized, in fact the engine is probably ok. The water pump is ok too. The crankshaft pulley and vibration damper did fall off/apart, the next morning.

If that is the extent of the damage, it's just a matter of extracting the broken bolts from the balancing disc and reinstalling the pulley and vibration damper with new bolts.---I think this is correct.

The service man at Zimbrick quoted me 900 dollars for a vibration damper, crankshaft pulley/ c.s. seal, bolts and belts and they want 900 for labor costs... I'll look up the parts here at Fastlane, and have them shipped to Zimbrick, where the car, is or to Brooklyn Motoren Werke (south of Madison) which looks from the website, like a great indy shop.

It is possible that the damper and pulley were damaged. But I would be very surprised if neither were reusable.

The must like to get $300 per hour!!! And that assumes that the balancing disc actually needs to come off.

Brooklyn Motoren Werks told me the last time they did this job, they charged $1700 ($1100 Labor+ 600 Parts) Zimbrick Mercedes has the car now and is asking $1700 ($700 Labor+ $1000 Parts)

I asked Brooklyn if I could buy parts from Fastlane and ship them, and Brooklyn did not like the idea.

Is there another mechanic around Madison that anyone knows of?

It's tough to have a meaningful discussion about the repair without knowing exactly what needs to be done. Similar situations have been completely resolved with $6 worth of socket head cap screws from the local hardware store. But it's also possible that everything on the front end of the crankshaft took a fatal hit. Not to mention the fan, radiator, belts, etc. It's also possible that the pulley failure was secondary to some other failure, like the alternator, water pump, etc.

Kelly-Moss Motorsports in Madison is recommended by the BMWCCA chapter -- they're a Euro shop vs. Merc specialist. Dunn's Import in Middleton is another euro (BMW- MB-Volvo-etc.) shop.

You might also try the Milwaukee Motorwerks-Madison shop at 3101 Watford Way in Madison. I think their hourly rate is a little lower than the average euro specialist shop. I used their Waukesha shop awhile back and found them to be pretty decent.

Well you really are in a difficult spot. Yet you are quite close to your destination. These service people almost without exception thrive on road repairs where the customer really has no place to go - therefore the super high prices. I think you might really be better off in renting a "U Haul" vehicle with a car trailer and get that car "off the road". Get it into your or your father's back yard and do a bit of self examination on the car. Are you able to do any of the work on it? It is not really complicated work, but it must be done right. But I think you might make some real inroads on those high prices by getting that vehicle out of the shop and on your own turf. From Madison you could tow that car to Chicago in three hours, bring the truck and trailer back to where you got it for the lowest cost, or pay somewhat more and drop it in Chicago and forgetaboutit. There is more then plenty help here on the forum to walk you through this job. The tools are simple, can be rented for cheap. I would get that car out from that shop now! Get it home and give us some pictures and we will tell you what to do. $1700.00 for parts and labor on that job is obscene.

Good advice there. You could rent a car dolly, pull the driveshaft and tow it back also.
