w126 Alternator Disassembly

I was driving my '87 300SDL around the other day and the serpentine belt came off.

I got out and looked and found that the alternator pulley and alternator fan were loose and rattling around on the shaft.

However, the nut is secured, I mean SECURED.

Any ideas on how to get the nut off the shaft?

I've got nothing to hold on to.

Anyone want to trade an old Volvo for an '87 300sdl?

Try an air impact gun. It spins fast enough to work.

good luck

Thanks, if I come across one I'll give it a try.

Any backyard mechanic ideas?

I've got nothing to lose at this point.

some alternators have windows that you can jam a wooden handle into it, to keep the armature from spinning. wallmart and harbor freight have 12v impact guns that are less than 50.00, 25 even...

I suppose I'll jam something in there, nothing to lose.

If Walmart had the last pint of blood on earth and I was in need of a transfusion...

The HF electric (not 12v) is one of the best things I've ever purchased from there. Some of their stuff is junk. The impact gun has held up and works great. I think I paid like $35 for it (with a coupon) years back. Well worth the investment.

Maybe I'll order it, I suppose I could use one.

It was so convenient when I had a Harbor Freight down the street from me.

I guess you would need to remove the alternator too as I don't think you could get the impact to fit if you went this route.
