How are the hinges looking after that?

Has the structure to which the hinges are fitted on the chassis survived?

Do you have a power sun roof or a manual one?

As Army said, check the hinges and the support structure for them. I haven't seen them escape this problem undamaged.

Here is a pic of an '87 300SDL that suffered the same fate. Not only did it damage the sunroof, but the roof around it. My indie is cobbling this together for one of his customers in his spare time. The car is yellow, and now, with a brown hood. It's not a quick task.

the roof is fine. the mercedes hood ornament hit the back edge of the sunroof.

the sunroof is electric.

i have a local shop that can repaint what i find, but need to find hood and sunroof and hinges.... central west new jersey location. rt78 near clinton...

also, are there instructions on how to remove the sunroof?

If the sunroof still moves on its own, slide it halfway open, pry down the forward edge of the liner (there should be 4-5 clips) to release the liner from the sunroof, hold the liner and slide the sunroof all the way open. Pull the liner up through the sunroof opening and off the car. Close the sunroof and scribe the position of the nuts along the side edges holding the sunroof panel to the sliding carriers. Remove the nuts and lift off the sunroof panel. Consider cleaning and lubing the 30 year old sliding mechanism (MB has a special gleisspaste), and replacing the peripheral gasket if there is wind noise.

You can try a wanted ad on Craigslist, or of course, the local JY's. You'll want to make sure your replacement hood is also aluminum, or use the springs from same. Alloy hood springs wont hold up the steel hood.

I've noticed 126 hoods require a bit of oomph to close...even then it is extremely wise to check both sides of the hood to ensure they are locked down.

bummer. this has happened to me in a toyota corolla and it hella sucked (dented up the roof, destroyed both hinges and the hood itself, and of course i almost crashed). like lubricating the hinges, it seems, once you've had this kind of hood failure, you won't forget to check....

Your old aluminum hood is worth $35 or more to a scrap yard. Be sure they give credit for it being aluminum.

Be sure to notice what locking mechanism you have. There may be 2 styles. I haven't looked to confirm. Make the deal on hood and everything connected to it grill, hood emblam, wiper nozzels, hinges. Never know what you'll need.

You can look out the side any time the windshield is blocked. Notice your options. It reduces the panic.

found a fiberglass hood (seller said it is a Euro hood), also has the hinges. sunroof as well... guess i will be making a roadtrip with my truck to get the parts this weekend. He is asking for 200.00 for all the items. I think that is a fair price. any comments on price?

exactly the reason i posted the message about the hood. i am wondering if it is somehow, aluminum,......... he mentioned it is light weight. my current hood is aluminum. i will look into the suggestion that this replacement is actually fiberglass. but whatever it's made of, what about the asking price for the parts?
