You do know the solution to the problem of what I like to call "rat-frak" fees......

make sure your pockets are full of bolts, fuses and blubls.

The way I see it Pick'n'pull is owned by Schnitzer Steel their job is to recycle steel. so If you buy a fender, they charge a core, because they want your mangled fender in return so they can recycle it.... totally understandable. so when I see fuses and bulbs laying around I know they're going to become trash once they take the car to the crusher. I might as well liberate them and put the in my garage. it also makes the "rat-frak" fees easier to stomach.

That doesn't work for me because I started doing that years ago to offset the ,first a dollar, then two dollar, price of "admission" to their freak show.

The only places I pay admission to are air conditioned. When they figure out how to do that, I will feel good about their stinkin' admission.

Delivery Valve. Forget it- those were the 50% off sale prices that ended Monday. Prepare to get shafted....

On some of those, even if you double the price, it's still better prices then what the yards charge here locally.

Truly, admission to a junk yard is hard to stomach. However, if the place is paved, there is ample room between the cars, free to use carts and lifts, I can be coerced into paying the fee if it's not too exorbitant.

^^ Well, it's one thing to have a '98 Ford pickup that needs a mirror. You go to u-pull-it and you reasonably expect to come away with the part. It's quite another thing to go looking for parts on a 30 year old Mercedes that may only have a 25% chance of being there. I mostly only show up for the sales these days. Despite the 11 cars in my fleet, there are too few of any of them left out there to justify regular trips to these yards. At least when they have sales I have a shot at batteries or tires that are worth the bother.

I believe the admission fee has to do with liability insurance.

If you pay a fee (however large or small) and "sign in," you are entering at your own risk. If there is NO fee, it somehow increases PNP's liability.

Perhaps someone more familiar with the law can expand and/or correct that statement but I believe that is the case.

I don't mind spening $2 bucks to save $100 on parts I need. That's a no-brainer.

^^ I don't mind spending the $2 when I walk out with parts. I do mind it when I waste my time and walk out emptyhanded ( but my pockets will be jingling anyway). Sure, they have to pay for liability insurance- so does everybody else. Put it in the final price of the product. When you see hundreds of dudes out there who slapped down $2 on a Saturday and run the numbers in your head, seems like another ripoff to me.

Important to note: the core charge is not discounted when there's a sale. I bought an engine at $90 (normally $180), but the core was still $50 (normally $50).

$140 for an engine is a good deal, of course. But I get frustrated over the principle of being exploited.

What happens to returned cores? I'll bet they're thrown back in the yard for someone else to purchase. Oh look, someone already pulled the part I need!

No. The core pile goes to China where they make it into toxic drywall or milk or soft wheel bearings.

The $2 fee seems totally fine to me. I always come away with something I need, and for a lot less than new, or buying a used part from a non-u-pull-it yard. I don't see the what the uproar is about. I suppose it helps that I have more than one vehicle, so eve if there's no good MB stuff, I can always pick up something I need for one of the Subarus, or the trucks.

Generally, when I have a bunch of stuff, including a large item or two, the guys tend to let me have the little stuff for free. If I only have a few small items, then I usually get charged the full price for those.

Yes, the "taxes" the government places on environmentally responsible recycling is universally stupid. Try complaining to your reps!
