Testing 240d Glow Plug Relay

Hi Folks,
I've narrowed my glow plug problem down to the relay (I think? ) Basic problem is glow plug light doesn't light - and the glow plugs don't heat up.

I've checked the following so far: 80a fuse, power to relay (big wire with nut),
glow plugs, wiring from GP relay to glow plugs --- all of the above test okay.

I have power going to the #15 terminal of the GP relay(this is with the key in the glow position) - but not to any of the other 3 terminals at this small plug. (there are 4 in total including #15)

I took the Gp relay apart & cleaned it up - it was a bit wet - but this didn't make a difference.

Where do I look next? I'm thinking about the other 3 terminals on the small plug. What do they do?

Also, if I was wondering about the availability of a used Gp Relay?

Thanks in Advance

ajb:

This is an electronic relay, so if it got wet it is probably shot.

Sounds like all the switches are working properly -- pin#15 is from the key switch (ignition on signaly), pin #31 is a ground for the thermistor (temperature sensor), and pin #50 is the starter energized signal (pin 50 is starter circuit). When the ignition is switched on, the relay should "click" as the contacts for the plugs closes.

You can "cheat" and get it going by making a "jumper cable" from heavy wire with and "alligator clip" on each end -- connect between the positive battery cable and the 80A fuse -- this will energize the glow plugs -- wait the usual time (30 sec?), the crank. When it starter, get out and disconnect the wire. Sort of a cludge, but better than no car!

What year is your 240D? There is one in the "you pull it" junk yard here, and I'd be glad to go look for the relay for you today -- I need to check for taillights for the Volvo again anyway.

Hi Peter,
Thanks for your reply!

The relay is (was) shot, although I fixed it for now. It seems the water in the relay, corroded part of the circuit board (solder). When I shorted out the corroded part, the relay worked. So I just solder a small wire to jump the corroded part & this fixed the problem.

I would still appreciate if you could have a look at that GP relay you mentioned. I'm not sure how long my solder job will last. If the relay is appropriate, I'd be interested & be willing to pay you for your time. My 240d is a 1982.

Thanks

ajb:

Bad news, the relay has already been snatched. Whoever took the engine completely stripped the engine compartment -- relays, hoses, rad, AC condenser, everything.

However, I don't see why your repair won't be permanent so long as you can keep the water out!

Hi Peter,

Thanks anyways for your effort!!

Tomorrow, I'll try to waterproof the relay box & then I'll cross my fingers lots. I'll still try to see if I can source a used relay just as a spare.
