I walked into my local NAPA store to purchase the tools to do this job & was given the name of a local rebuilder. So I contacted him w my symptoms & he thinks it's my bendix as well. So I guess I have a case of A Bendix Situs!

Went to NAPA & ordered a 1/2 in drive 10mm allen socket & 5 in wobble extension. I was also givin a name of a local guy that will rebuild my original Bosch starter. I called him up, told him my symptoms & he said bendix, just like I thought. As soon as I get a few guys to help me push it in the garage, I'm on it!

I've never done a W123 series but the W126 series isn't too bad. The wobble extension is the key to making it easier. After disconnection of the battery, pull the front bracket first then the two main bolts.

Also, when re-installing the starter don't take a shortcut and leave the front bracket off. Someone did this on mine before I got it and I was tightening starter bolts every time I turned around. That little L-shaped bracket is over $50.

Good to know, I'm going to de-grease the engine 1st. I will use the bracket, I'm not smarter than the engineer's that designed the car. How did guys used to get those out before the wobble extension? Universals are sort of a pain, I've never had any luck w those! Picked up my tools, just have to do it now!

I wonder if some thread locker would help keep you bolts tight!

Another question, would it be OK to use some starter fluid to get her going so that I can get her in the garage?

starting fluid is not going to help a car with a slow starter. it could cause the motor to spin backwards, and if the glow plugs are on, it could explode, and damage things in the motor.

I have had a Advanced Auto Parts.Starter for over a year now.Can't beat the price.

I hope they build starters better than they build an Alt. I liked Advanced because I was able to get the 20% discount online, but I went thru about a 1/2 dozen Alts in the Dodge Cummins, the AC was to high & it cause me all kinds of wacked out trans problems. The did give me my money back. The guy from a local Diesel Performance place in town told me to get a NAPA.

Yes, the 126 starters are easier to remove as there is a lot more room near the starter. On 123s it is a lot tighter.

I have two life time starters from oreilly....one has been in for 2 years and going fine the other one close to 6....
