300TD wagon better fuel economy and Need a rear strut

Hi,

I am new to auto work and new here, but I am getting some great feedback on my om617 swap to my fj60 and so I figured I would ask a question.

I have a blown strut in the back of my 85 300TD wagon. Anyone have a spare they will sell, or know where to get one? I am considering switching to a heavy duty airbag system if there isn't a better solution.

Next. I met a guy who has an 84 and he says he is getting almost 40mpg on the highway. I remember him saying something about insulating the fuel lines to keep them hot (170f?), does this help? What other things can I do to bump my 20mpg(around town).

Thanks,

Not sure on the suspension, but unless that guy has a 190 diesel he isn't getting close to 40 on the freeway, my om606 will barely do 40 on its best day. Things to check are the good old reliable things to improve performance and mileage: valve adjustment, diesel purge, fuel and air filters, fuel tank strainer, and fuel leaks (especially around the injector return lines), and don't forget tire pressure, dragging brakes, and bad wheel bearings. Although with those last couple you'd likely have other symptoms. Check to see if the screw on top of the ALDA has been cranked up, that can really tear into your in-town MPG, IIRC counter clockwise increases fuel performance and fuel consupmtion, but it's best to search that to be sure.

How many miles on the car? My 85 300SD after a valve adjust and fresh fluids and filters all around will still only do 28mpg highway at best.

The guy must be getting ready to vend it on ebay. Did he also mention it will go a million miles?

miles

16,542,851 - but mine only has 160k. He is keeping it. He said that heating the fuel helped alot.

No idea. Still need a rear strut.

Try a "WTB" (want to buy) add in the Used Parts subforum (scroll down on the main forum page).

Guys do part out wagons from time to time.

Search on sls ram, or strut or shock. I think I saw a post on here recently where somebody was selling a set. The guy is lying or he can't divide.

Or his odometer is slipping. Or he's just an out and out liar.

The last time I looked they sold the Fuel Injection line Heaters (for people who use some form of Veggie Oil for Fuel) on eBay. Why not buy a set; install them and report back to us if they raise your mileage/Gallon.

If his odometer was slipping, wouldn't his mileage be lower rather than higher?

Maybe some feel good magnets on the fuel lines as well? Or turbulators in the incoming airstream? A computor chip should also give you another 100 horsepower and up the milage at the same time. At least we should grease the face of the tires to reduce rolling resistance regularily.

The fact that there is no place to plug a chip in is irrelevant as long as you buy one. I visualise that whole area as a million dollar industry for some people out there. Sad but true.

A 617 can make 40 miles per gallon easily but you have to go over a cliff to get it. So it is more or less a one time event.

Not saying this to cause an argument; but, I actually think that Heating the Fuel in the Fuel Injection Hard Lines will allow the Fuel to burn more completely. That should improve Fuel economy.

But, are not going to get 10+ extra miles per gallons from that.

The only way an average Person could see if that is true is if they had a a Diesel Generator that they could running at a constant speed and load with a measured amount of Fuel.
Driving in your Car as too many variables; one long Traffic Signal could throw the test.

But, I do think the Fuel saving gadgets are funny.

Other possible Fuel Econ solution

I remembered that he also mentioned that he had gotten another transmission from a later year Mercedes. I think he said it had 5 gears. He wanted a taller finish gear. Ah well, I may have to get a fuel heater just to show off my naivete.

Keep the feedback coming.

I know what you mean, its all a state of mind, we may be headed downhill backwards. maybe that's the issue, I think I am headed one way and in fact we are all headed the other way.

Hmm
an 85, vehicle with 5 speed transmission... what vehicle is it? I guess it's possible with a lot of weight reduction, 5 gears, tiny tires, with high pressure, brakes with perfect pad recall, possibly an air dam or spoiler or both... hypermiling tech tricks too....
but the heating of the fuel sounds like he's mixing in VO and calling the TOTAL fuel used as economy, because the VO is free...
