Jeremy:

Thank you for doing the research - good stuff to know.

By the way, a few weeks ago I told you I was going to check/clean/lube my resonance flaps. I examined the top flap and found an issue - will report more in another two weeks if the check engine light stays off.

These are well described in the 1995 "Introduction to service" manual published by Mercedes.

Also in this engine is a third flap just ahead of the EGR valve. This flap is described as an "intake manifold air pressure control flap" but its purpose is a little hazy. I've finally decided that it's there to lower the air pressure in the intake manifold and thus encourage more exhaust to be sucked through the EGR valve. Since I have temporarily disabled the EGR valve (as an experiment to see if intake manifold cleanliness is improved) the pressure control flap is no longer necessary. I decided to remove it.
has anyone performed this yet on a '97? the '97 has more electronics. i suspect it would trigger a cel.

I tried it on my '96 E300 and it did set a flag (CEL). The code was P0120, which was fairly meaningless in and of itself but it occurred immediately following removal of the flap so I knew the cause. Replaced the flap, cleared the code, didn't return. I agree that the '97 E300 would have the same problem.
