240D Master cylinder/vac booster prob.

I couple of days ago the clutch pedal on my 1980 240D went to the floor and wouldn't return. I used my foot to lift up on the pedal and it worked fine as I headed for home. As soon as I got home I looked under the hood and noticed a minor leak between the brake master cylinder and the vacuum booster unit. The fluid level was still close to the MAX level in the reservoir and there weren't any other leaks. The brakes have always had a solid feel to them and stop the car just fine. Also, I replaced the clutch slave cylinder a couple of months ago so I know that isn't the problem. Could this be a simple fix like replacing the sealing ring between the master cylinder and the vacuum booster or something more complicated? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I don't know if this helps or not, but my father's '82 240D did the same thing. Initially the slave cylinder was leaking, so it was replaced. Afterwards, maybe about a month later, the symptoms you described occured. No visible leaks, so we could not figure out the problem and took it to the local independant. He replaced the master cylinder. He said you have to replace both at the same time. I don't know if that's true or not, but it worked for my father's 240D.

The leak and clutch problem are probably not related. Clutch on the floor is symtomatic of clutch master cylinder failure, or at least introdution of air into the system, which usually is drawn in through the master cylinder. You may want to read the other current post on bleeding the system....it's lots of fun to do it.

Good luck.
