Bad CV joint?

83 300SD has developed a new noise.
Seems to be coming from left rear.
It is a clunk kind of sound that is directly related to the tire rotation.
Sound diminishes when turning either way, under typical acceleration, and under firm braking.
Gets much louder on deceleration.
Did not make the noise when rear wheels were off the ground, either under power or being turned by hand.
CV boots look old, but not torn.
Does this sound like a CV issue?

Anyone know a good source for replacements or a shop that can rebuild the CV shaft?
Couldn't locate anything through Fastlane.

Sounds just like cv joints, my w123 was doing the same thing and luckily I had an extra on hand that I got for free! Just like yours, mine made the same noise under the same conditions, and the boot was still in pretty decent condition. Not sure of what brand the replacement was, something Chinese haha. I have heard *********.com has axles at reasonable prices, just beware their return policy sucks

sounds like it. put the car where it will not roll and put in neutral, then crawl under the back and grab the half shaft and wiggle up and down. If it moves up and down at all it is bad.

Thanks, Tom. I'll check that today. Couldn't feel anything in the half shaft with the car on a lift, but the angle is completely different with the suspension hanging.

I'm looking around for a reputable place to get the old shafts rebuilt. I am going to do both sides, and would like to avoid fitment issues.

Seems like a good time to do my flex joints too, as I noticed the front one showing threads.... Look for one problem and find two more....

I had thumping on deceleration. Thought maybe a wheel bearing. Star Tech, an indy, said dry CV joints and injected some grease into the boot. Sound went away. That was about 5 yrs ago and it's still doing fine.

Did he pull the clamp off from the axle and slide the boot over to inject grease?

I was contemplating a similar plan of action, as I would like to be able to have a little more flexibility in timing of the repair. Also still trying to find a good axle rebuilder here in CT. The one I had used in the past is out of business.

Was also thinking about punching a small hole in the boot to inject grease, then repairing the hole with an inner tube patch.

Tom, no movement at all up and down. Is it normal to be able to move the shaft laterally? I was able to make it shift sideways about 3/4"

Not completely sure how they injected the grease but they probably did loosen a clamp.

Clamps loosened, grease injected. Hope zip ties will suffice to reseal the boot. Have to keep an eye on that. Didn't want the extra unbalanced weight of a hose clamp.

When I did the uppers, the stuff that poured out all over me seemed just like extra thin gear lube. The diff doesn't supply lubrication to the upper CV joint, does it?
