99 e300td questions
Hi all,
Thanks for reading this. I have a 99 e300 w210. I'm wondering a few things, I'm getting dmn near 300k on this car and rather than listing everything ive done to itwas wondering A) what oil should I be using for oil changes? B) what service things should be done at this point since my fss has 300mi left before service and what others things will this be needing typically so I can know wether I've covered my bases or am missing something I.e.( trans service, common wear items, etc) C) I have major turbo lag and I was wondering if this is the car, or can something be done? Any info would be greatly appreciated |

Hi, I can speak to a couple of your questions.
A few of us here use Mobil 1 15W-40 Turbodiesel Truck. In any case, always use a diesel rated oil to keep soot in suspension. As far as turbo lag, mine has always had a huge lag if I floor it from a dead stop. It's like nothing happens for a second or two then it goes crazy. I've done a couple things to mitigate this. One, I've adjusted all the slack out of the throttle linkage. Adjustment is under the hood on the TPS on the left side inner fender. Just don't take too much out or it won't return to idle. Secondly, I've adopted a "two step" acceleration process. I simply push it about half way, wait for a half second then go the rest of the way. This gives the turbo some time to spool. The problem is that the ECU waits for boost before it will allow full fueling and this is what you're feeling when it lags. The ECU programming is pretty aggressive to reduce smoke on acceleration which makes the lag worse.

I've always used M1 0W-40. Is sometimes labeled European Blend pending what stage Mobil is at in their constant re-marketing/labeling cycle. Was the factory fill when it was new.
Chips (ECU reprogramming), oftentimes improves turbo lag.

What about maintenance items? Do u still change fluid in a sealed tranny? What about other things that you would recommend at 300k?

Transmission should be serviced every 50K or so using the proper approved fluids. Your car has a torque converter with a drain plug, so that should be drained too. That way you will get nearly all of the old fluid out. Look at the list of items that need to be done at the A/B services and do them. There are also some time related items like coolant every three years (again using the proper coolant), brakes every two years, etc. A search ought to bring up those lists and it is in your owners manual packet too.

Unrelated. Question but since I have some avid users here ill ask. I have a diesel lea k, it's not my delivery valves as I did those last summer and I can tell. However the lines hav nt been done but they don't seem to leak, it's leaking from around the ip not sure exactly where... Do you guys know of any common culprits besides deliv valves and clear lines?? Also since this will most likely require intake removal(it always does) what else should i knock out while I'm down there?

Waste a can of carb or brake cleaner on the IP to clean it up/dry it out, then run it and look/feel for the leak.
Leaks are usually orings at fuel lines, the SOV and the DV's in that order. You can disconnect the windsheild washer bottle and get fair access to to the side of the IP. I only take the IM off for DV's and GP's, the rest I can do from the top. The 722.6 trans service interval was changed from sealed, to change once at 100k miles 3-5 years after introduction; then revised to every 39.5k miles a few years ago.

Terry - Mercedes never officially changed from their "sealed for life" stance on our transmissions though did they? Only the newer cars had it spelled out that way right?

Len - The recommendations have evolved over time. I beleive I've posted the 39.5k interval previously. Was a couple of years ago.

Pnlot, regarding leaks on/near the IP, You may find that it's leaking from the cover plates on the IP. There's one on the bottom and one on the side. Both are sealed with molded rubber seals similar to O-rings but in rectangular shape. They shrink over time - especially if you run biodiesel and/or SVO. The seal on the back of the pump is not effected because it seals oil, not fuel. I've got a couple of new seals on my bench along with an intake manifold gasket for when I finally get around to correcting this.

The side and bottom covers seal the main IP case which should also only have engine oil. Regardless, it's not unusual to see leaks at 300K miles.
Have you checked the chain? Jeremy shared an excellent how-to for a '96 E300. Sixto 87 300D^2 Last edited by sixto; 06-03-2012 at 12:12 PM. |

Terry - I know that Mercedes changed the intervals over time with the new cars, but when asked if that applied to our original "sealed for life" recommendation, I thought their stance was that it did not apply to our cars even though the transmissions were identical. It's made sense all along that our transmissions need to be serviced, but I think Mercedes did not want to admit that their initial recommendation was incorrect.
