w116 Rims

Own a 1979 300sd, 3rd owner and wondering what is the best way to clean alloy rims. It seems like the rims are pitted and such surface allows the excess accumulation of brake dust and other road debris. Every now and then I use steel wool#0000 and it works well except for those hard to buff corners, nooks etc. I have used a pressure washer in the past but I'm really starting to get tired and would like some expert advice. I have thought about spray painting them so as to create a smooth surface that will then become easily cleanable. If indeed I do paint them what type of paint should be applied?
If I don't paint them, what are the best ways to clean rims. What about brake dust covers? Any brake dust covers for classic MB's?
