Grommet job... routing cables

Okay,

I have replacement grommets on the way for the firewall of the '77 240D. I'm looking at the wiring and cables that go through most of the grommets and I'm seeing some fun issues ahead.

Some of the wiring harness expand in size, some rather significantly on both the inside and outside of the grommet.

So I'm left with a few of options:
1) Unwrap all the wires and re-feed then rewrap. (very time consuming)
2) Cut and splice the wires (faster and okay if done correctly)
3) Split the grommet and risk leakage.
4) Don't bother and live with wet floorboards and stinky engine fumes inside the car.

Any suggestions?

I suspect that I will be using a combination of 1) and 2).

Split the grommet and silicone (flame suit on).

Go with the choice that you know you can do well and feel good about.

Instead of silicone, think this is a better solution.... Split the grommet and use windshield urethane adhesive to seal the split.

I think the grommets aren't really there to address leaks. They just prevent the wires from the sheet metal. Anything that holds a split grommet in-place should be good enough.

They definitely keep out water when you are degreasing the engine compartment.

I'm quite certain that they will also help cut down on engine fumes getting into the passenger compartment.

We have a winner!

When I removed my A/C the firewall hole was replaced with a piece of lexan & sealant. Worked just fine.

Who did you obtain the grommets from?
