anyone want their car to be on national TV?

Watching Discovery Channel, I took notice of a promo for an upcoming series about "beater" cars. Open casting call for people to enter their tired old cars in a competition for a chance to win $10,000 in upgrades. So I entered my '82 300SD. I thought "how could I loose", well I was sure wrong on that.

I filled out the online form on Sunday, come Monday, I have a call back!!! Holy cow! So I eagerly call the lady back and she asks me about my car, what I like about it, what I don't like about it, and tells me that they are really interested in entering my car (probably have around 7000 neons and cavaliers entered) At this point I'm grinning ear to ear!

She continues to tell me they are the same people who produce the series "Canada's Worst Driver". Five cars will enter, only one will win. The cars will be tested against each other for things such as acceleration, braking, handling etc. (well, I have already lost) The best of the worst wins. If you win, $10,000. If you loose, $1500...

Wait for it...

Wait for it...

...$1500 for your car and they destroy it on television. Ohhh. Um, no thanks!

I was so happy, only to be so let down.

She asked if I was willing to gamble my car, I said no. She was actually quite persistent. I still declined. I figured if someone else entered a '90s 5.0 Mustang, I have lost the acceleration. A civic will out handle me, If they test braking control on a wet surface, anything with ABS will win.

I was asked if I knew anyone else who would like to enter, so if anyone else does, PROPER TELEVISION :: CAR :: Apply Now!

if the link gets blocked out, PM me and I will send it to you.

I want to say I have seen a similar show before. It's a cool concept but I'm not going to risk crushing a perfectly good car.

Interesting.................now moving right along................

Anything to intertain the mind numbed general public with another type of reality show.

Adding a different flavor to the evening Pacifier.

This is just another sneeky way to get older cars off the road.

Seems like a cheap rusted out 400E could be a solid contender

I wonder how the final results are tallied...

1 point for each round?

times, g forces, stopping distance, fuel economy, offset via mileage, condition, etc...

who knows? if the results are based on scale, with mileage as the determining factor, a decent diesel could win. even over a high powered mustang. toss in age as a factor, and our 30+ year old turbo diesels could be outright unbeatable...

of course, what could the 10,000.00 upgrades possibly be? fresh paint? euro headlights? new tires/brakes? oh oh... neon underbody accents, and widescreen tv's in the back...

A trip to the MB Classics Center would be at the top of the list, if given the choice.

I doubt you would get much with $10k at the classic center.

Even if it's just an interior restoration, it's better than neon underbody accents, and widescreen tv's in the back.

Hmm, I've got a 97 E320 that:

Was sitting for 2 years with the back windows open ( bad regulators )

Has green algae growing on the outside ( black car )

Rust here and there.

Hood held down with a bungee strap.

Only problem is I doubt I could find another parts car exactly the same for $ 1,500 . ( The drive line is a exact match for my 97 SL 320 .)

Being the suspicious IT guy I had to check out the link. Straight to a sign up form that asks for more information than I am willing to give up. Google'd around and it looks legit but will be shot in the "GTA" which I am translating to Greater Toronto Area. Not worth the travel and time off.

edit:
Just noticed on the form... "...The series will shoot in Toronto ..."

It's too bad that the folks from "Make It Right Productions", aren't doing a MOT style inspection and restoration show. That would be a better bet.

There are plenty of shows out there that would 'pimp' your ride, but how many do straightforward restoration-to-original, or even mild resto-custom without going totally off-the-rails?

I guess that I'm more of a fan of Wheeler Dealers than I am of West Coast Customs, but that's just my taste.

I agree 100%. I'd love to see a show like the one you suggested!

I wonder if I could talk my friend into entering his 300,000 mile SDL w/ a cracked cylinder head...
