Will 19 Gauge Stainless Steel Wire Work as Temp Muffler Hanger?

Random thought of the day: hmmmmm, I wonder if the muffler hangers on my new SDL are in good shape. One missing and one hanging by a thread! Then, I check the muffler hangers on the 92 300D that installed all of 7,000 miles ago and they're cracked!

So, I ordered a bunch of muffler hangers.

Will 19 gauge stainless wire work as a good stop gap measure? Could it support the weight of the muffler? Well, it will have to!

I've used a hose clamp to replace a missing hanger in a pinch.

There was a thread about hangers a year or 2 ago.
I have used poly hay band. Just wrap it around & around & tie it off. Metal wire may cause vibrations to be transmitted to the body.

I'm trying to remember which of my cars, but there was one that I used a coat hanger for, looped it around twice and twisted it against itself a couple of times. It held for a long time.

Kris, you better hope that people don't draw conclusions re parts quality on your CRUISE CONTROL rebuilds based on your MUFFLER WORK!

I've used zip-ties in a pinch. It's obviously not a long-term solution, but 2 or 3 together can replace a hanger for a few weeks.

LOL. This was on my buddy's 560SEL we had just purchased in NYC. The PO said he was driving when all of a sudden the exhaust broke. This was his temporary fix.

Interestingly enough, my 420SEL started to break at the same point, we had the resonators cut out and a straight pipe installed in their place. Its just as quiet without them. Now the 300SD sans resonator..is not so quiet.

what are you talking about?

that's some QUALITY "muffler hanger" installation right there!
notice the double connections under each bolt, not a single wire wrapped around... and the amazing quality of the anodized "muffler hanger" seriously, that's a great install job!

I don't see why it wouldn't work! I used a rusty piece of bailing wire I found in a barrel to hold up the muffler on a tractor last week when the exhaust hanger broke, and it even worked for a whole 10 hour day of raking hay in a bumpy field, and that was with only 1 loop holding it up!

I'm starting to become a believer in coat hangers....only to discover that my wife has replaced virtually all our wire ones with plastic ones.

Guess it's time to get some drying cleaning done....
