I do believe it is any divorce agreement that the child's mother is required to call any car purchased or maintained by the child's father a "death trap" or piece of S**t. I spent two years putting a 300 together for my oldest son. I told her I had some front end work to do but it was just a first car and just a beater so we wouldn't cry if he had a fender bender. She whisked it off to Mercedes and they deemed it a road hazard. She bought him a Jeep with twice as many miles and has since spent 2k on repairs for it. I took the car back and have been driving the crap out of it since just to show her.

Kids & Parenting (Topic Drift)

Daw ;

(is it O.K. I call you that ?) .

GOOD ON YA for this with your Daughter ! she may take a while to come around but in time , unless she's dim , she'll realize you only give her helpful advice and are always there , not with a checkbook in hand but useful information to become a productive Adult Citizen .

Yes , I really do believe this B.S. I espouse .

I raised my Son alone from 12 Y.O. when his Mother more or less took off , long before that I made him toe the line , always about everything and oddly , he whizzed through school with a 4.0 GPA and never was arrested , did drugs , got tattoos (I have ink) nor brought me any bastards .

Not bad for a single uneducated Blue Collar guy in The Ghetto , eh ? .

He began going on traveling jobs with me when he was 5 or 6 and had to save up for his own first car , pay for the tags and insurance too as I knew if he did this , he'd value it more and he did in spite of becoming a far better and faster competitive racer that I ever dreamed of .

Kids are always smarter and more aware than their parents think , they watch and observe everydamnthing .

You and your Daughter will do fine with this attitude you're displaying .

Yeah , I hear this ! .

My ex is always calling me to cry and complain why our Son likes to spend time with me instead of her.....

In time most kids figure out who's really on their side .

Things get better. My older son has come around. Both of my exes rely on me for insurance. I realize that all women who would be married to me to begin with are going to be similar. The 1st 2 turned out to be good women. We didn't have the tools to get through the hard stuff. Still, I don't want to be married to either of them. A decent, cordial working relationship is enough.

Thumbs up Getting Better

Yes , they do indeed get *much* better .

I now can occasionally have coffee with the ex and last year when the Cantinflas movie came out I took her to see it as we'd both greatly enjoyed him when we were dating long ago .

She also calls me every time she crashes yet another boyfriend or husband , that's fine too , I hold no rancor as she married me when I was a dumbassed 18 year old , gave me my beloved Son and then bugged out leaving me with " all your crappy old cars , Motos and this ancient Ghetto house " un encumbered so I have no real bones to pick .

Our Son is doing very well indeed and gave me a beautiful Grand Daughter 2.7 years ago , he'll turn 37 next month .

Life is good ! .

Kids are the hardest job you'll ever love .

Interesting detour discussion

Choover --- your userid is quite interesting; I dated a Choover in Louisville, KY before I met my ex wife.

Junkman --- I understand. My 2nd ex wife became an important friend last year. She's in the "life is too short; everyone needs more friends" camp.

vwNate --- 10-4 on the oldest daughter. While learning about air pressure and how to ck and add air to tires, she brought up a friend of hers paid $125 for an oil change. Daughter said that sounded high. I told her oil and an oil filter would be about $20 for her car from AutoZone and I've got all the tools. I'd be happy to teach her and help her. She said she's coming to Dad's Oil Change station.

Car Update --- My youngest daughter and I typically do the Friday night dinner date every other weekend......So, last night as we were getting in my driving car, the garage door was still up and we could see this thread's project car, I asked if she still wanted the car. She said, yes, she would take anything free. Well, she turned 12 today, so I gave her the key and said Happy Birthday. She also wants to go to the junkyard with me. I told her to write it down, so that when she turns 16, she will remember.

Time will tell.

ps --- yes, you can call me, daw ---- and it's spelled with a small "d". That's a story for when we are face to face after a couple of drinks.
ha ha ha

Unhappy The Death Of Diesel

Too bad the blush is long gone off the Diesel Mercedes rose .

I see there are still some wildly overpriced W123 wagons out there, sedans are *much* cheaper and often simply junked in spite of overall good basic condition .

My Son is anxious to get my gray market 300TD but SWMBO says she'll drive it until she can't .

Every where it goes strangers want to know what it is, is it for sale and where to find one .

I was moving it yesterday and a Middle Eastern fellow stopped loading his family into their car and ran over to tell me how nice it is and talk about it when I mentioned I have three Mercedes Diesels he nodded and said, "I saw your European Spec. Diesel coupe over there" and pointed to it across the parking lot .

He said he'd love to have a nice W123TD back home and went back to his family .

A sad thing that more Americans are concerned by flash and what others think than the safety and economical long life of our cars .

Reviving this thread.....

Oldest daughter started dating a welder/gearhead, nice guy and actually asked me if I still had it. I told I still had it but, it didn't belong to me anymore; however, she might be able to buy it. After talking with her BF, decided not to do the old car.

Youngest daughter turned 15 in October and has expressed interest in getting permit.

Hi there!!!!

Sorry, it's taken me so long to reply to your posting. Actually, it was the front driver's side headlight lens. Found the post:
Third Texas Mercedes-Benz Get Together-Saturday, July 26th 2008
And it was the 2008 Texas CTG gathering.

I got moved in August 2017; my full-time job ended in December 2017; bought a sailboat in May 2018; digging the car out in December 2018.

Getting Ready --- Need assistance

Hi everyone.

Long time no talk! Well, the youngest daughter took her permit test (1st time) and failed it. She also told me in TN it's 6 months after you get your permit before you can get your driver's license.

So......it's time for me to get back on this project.

I need some assistance. The next order of business is to repair/replace the freeze plug on the driver's side. It's quite obvious that I will need to remove the injection pump to get to the freeze plug.

Has anyone here removed an injection pump before?

Post IP Service

There are quite a few threads on IP removal, you'll need to remove the oil cooler hoses and detach the oil filter canister from the engine block (! NEW GASKET !) .

There's no need to touch the easy to damage oil pressure gauge line, just undo the oil filter canister and set it aside a little bit .

Get a used steel injector pipe and cut it off to make the drip timing tool, find the how to time the pump threads and print them out, use as cheat sheets when you're out working on the car getting filthy .

It's a fiddly job but you can do it ~ clean the driver's side of the engine, bay and chassis hospital clean before you start and the job goes *much* easier .

I forget where but it's important to set the engine to TDC or something before you begin .

Use NEW 6MM allen tools to loosen the 4 (? 5?) allen bolts holding the oil filter canister or suffer .

BTW : congrats (?) on your Daughter getting ready to drive ! .
