Well I got a bad fill up, this was a texaco station in SW houston, the exhaust smelled like "fermenting sewage in a 3rd world country warzone" - (been there) - the engine was rather sleepy too - yet very noisy.

Good I only filled 10 bucks of it, i'll have to pump it out at my usual station - which has those cool truck nozzles that bombard diesel into the tank.

Bio300, I tried some bio in the the 300d that Stuart owns now and I must of plugged up 10 fuel filters in a row. I've heard it was the old gook in the tank being cleaned out?? Not sure, but my bio experience was a pain in the a$$. after I ran straight diesel again everything was back to normal. But recalling back I think it was b99? Does that sound right?
Had the same thing happen in my '83 sedan. On the plus side, it eventually finished cleaning the tank and my fuel gauge magically started working right again.

I'm actually thinking of running some through my '81 TD, because it seems to have sludge-in-the-tank issues. I'd rather change filters regularly for a while than deal with dropping the tank to clean it.

I agree with that!

Gonna look at my injection timing today.

Did you adjust the timing? How did that go?

I wouldn't adjust that timing, The fuel syndrome seems common among us. I have purchaced the cheapest deal on diesel to save a few cents. The next few days were an engine that was loud and pissed off sounding with poor power.
I am not sounding off to oil companies in Florida but hess keeps her Happy and healthy.

I have read in other posts that feuls are regulated durring winter (snow) months for octane and freeze prevention. These fuels will reduce performance but keep ripe durring freeze etc... We don't have this in Florida I hope.

Be weary of saving a 5 or 10 when fueling diesel.

Regards, Mike

Note: The 123/124 Diesel in Florida is great for collecting alge in the tank. (Humidity)

The easy fix is replacing the screen (sock) located in the bottom of the tank. Flush the tank with a little mineral spirit or fuel and clean or replace the screen.

The timing should not be altered unless you suspect a loose timing chain.

Mike

No. I started reading about the drip method, then the proper method requiring a special tool & got discouraged. do I need a timing light?
I attend a class in Orlando on Mondays. Its 1.5hrs one way. It seemed to run ok tonight but still with little pinging. I did notice that my last two fill-ups have only gotten 28mpg down from the 32mpg in the past. But I've not turned the AC off at all. I want to order the wrenches to adjust my timing too. Every 10k right? Think I have 8k on it since Pierre adjusted them. I need to double check my records on the fuel filters too, but know I changed them the 1st time I got bad diesel, so thinking only 2-3k on them.

Mike, I'll look into that sock screen. Is it cleanable or just swap it out for new one? I like the Hess here in Melbourne, Fl. But the Sunoco screwed me!!

It is cleanable,

You may find it damaged or leaking after the service. I would just replace it considering the problem you are facing.
The screen is different on gas cars as well, so don't try to swap.

Thanks Mike! I'll look into that as well. My "to-do" list is growing.

$hitty fuel seems to be common all around. Here in NC, the only place my W126 seems to be happiest with is at a hole in the wall station in Vale on Hwy 10. With that fuel, she chirps second gear and has tons of power, ahem... for an OM617 in an SD that is, boosts quickly, and has better mileage. I ALWAYS go to that filling spot. Any other brand fuel just doesn't do it for Frau and I.

VSTech, do you find fuel issues in your neck of the woods?
