I don’t know vacuum ?? help requested.

I have a 1980 300SD om617.950 I have installed it into a 1985 4runner and I fell the vacuum pump is not producing adequate vacuum. I put my finger over the hose and I can barley fell a pull/draw ? the engine was in a salvage yard for a few years ? and it is the single port pump.

Is this correct ? thanks for the help from the new bee knob in Wisconsin.

some pics of the swap

Get a Mity Vac and get a reading on the level of vacuum and report back. Should be at least 18 inches of mercury depending on your altitude.

yotadiesel 06-11-2012 12:23 PM

will do that tonight.
are the pumps hard to rebuild ? or get a used on e from a salvage yard ?

kerry 06-11-2012 12:25 PM

Most people rebuild them.

by 18" of mercury you mean bar or psi ?

are the pumps hard to rebuild ?

1 inch of mercury = 0.49109778 pounds per square inch
Ok I get it now.
At least 8.039 PSI

Inch of mercury - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

inHg is it's own measurement.

I would think the pump is a diaphragm unit.

kerry 06-11-2012 01:22 PM

Picture shows a diaphragm pump. They are easy to rebuild. Common failure is a bad check valve which wouldn't require a new diaphragm.

yotadiesel 06-11-2012 01:30 PM

can u chet the check valve ?

yotadiesel 06-11-2012 10:04 PM

I did take the check valve out and the was now air flow in our out I did get it to open but not close again. So I need a new check valve. But with the check valve in and stuck open my vacuum gauge jumped around from 15-20 psi.

kerry 06-11-2012 10:33 PM

Well, if you're getting psi, then something is seriously wrong:)

yotadiesel 06-12-2012 06:21 AM

Sorry I ment inches of vacuum

Quite clearly a piston pump.

????

It is the piston pump by pics #2 & 5. The rebuild kit is a little more spendy if its not just a faulty check valve.
