Problems engaging reverse gear 350SDL

1991 350SDL approx. 240k

Since I have owned the car (last 50k) there was a few seconds delay from selecting reverse gear to engaging reverse gear. In the last few weeks the time was noticeably longer. Yesterday it would not engage reverse at idle no matter how long I waited, even with a warm car. I have found that it will engage if I raise the rpm's above 2000, (and then it chirps the tires).

The fluid is up to the full mark on the dip stick when warm.

I have an extra transmission sitting around, but if there is any easier fix...

Thanks,
Greg

Now, I have found that if I hold the rpm's at about 1000, it will engage reverse after about 5 - 10 seconds.

Is this a problem only with reverse, or will I soon loose forward gears too?

Can't say on your car, but on mine Forward gears were not affected.

The B3 piston seal is failing. You will have to take it out and yank the front half off to fix it. It's up to you at that point how much you would need to do to rebuild it.

Can the B3 piston be removed and replaced with the transmission in the car ?
