Front pump bad = no transmission?

I recently did some work to the front pump on my '87 300SDL and I need to know: if the transmission will move the car forward, does that mean the front pump is operating?

Anyone want to trade an old Volvo for an '87 300sdl?

if your car moves, on a level surface from a dead stop, your front pump is working. for the rear pump to work your car has to be moving I think

if the front pump was bad you would be sitting there idle.

Here's the sequel

Bad trans governor = no shift?

To check the front pump you can measure the working pressure with a gauge. Alternatively you could get really messy and remove a (transmission) oil cooler line and then watch for pressurised fluid (or not) to go squirting all over the place... Don't let a transmission run dry though!

It sums up my experience with cars fairly accurately.
