CV joints can make more and stranger noises than you would ever believe until it happens to you.... I had one which would sound like one end was disconnected and banging on the underside of the car... I would stop.... back up... and it would quit for 200 to 300 miles and then do it again... but I drove it for at least 10,000 miles before I put a new half shaft in ... There are at least two styles of CV joint..and some came out of the factory with one of each ( about 1981 I think I read) ... and mine was one of those..... I had suspected that someone had put the wrong one in but the book said otherwise..... The first time it made that big racket I did not know that backing up would help... I drove about 20 miles at 15 miles per hour on the shoulder of the road...I do wonder about the difference between oil in MB originals and the grease in aftermarket or rebuilds....

Question 1976 240D Help!

All of a sudden mine has started thumping in the rear but only when I turn to the right.
It doesn't sound like metal to metal neccessarly but it is a very strong thumping and does not happen when I turn left even when I push it into the curve. If I ease around the curve or turn (to the right) it will thump lightly but the harder I turn and the more the car leans the harder and longer it thumps.
From the drivers seat it sounds like it is coming from the middle rear but both passengers (sitting on the right side) said they thought the sound was coming from the right rear, and yes, it was still there after they got out.
I crawled under and could not find anything loose or with any obvious wear or impact marks. This car does seem to sit a little low in the rear but the shocks stop on the second/third bounce.
Any ideas?

Thanks

Thumping on my left rear problem.

Update on my thumping on my left rear tire, the problem was caused by a strip bolt on the brake caliper. Couple of months ago I replaced the rear brakes from my 1990 300E and found out that one of the two bolts (lower) on my brake caliper was stripped. Which could have caused the thumping sound, when the caliper was moving side to side intermittently. Really weird but ever since I replaced the bolt with a new locking screw, I never heard that thumping sound again. The last rear brake job on this car was done by a mechanic in Virginia, before my time. I am still observing if the thump comes back, but it has been a while and I already put it in quite some miles on her.

My situation was almost exactly like Leathermang's, and in a previous post I mentioned that the oil in the boots had slung out thru a radial tear in the boot by the axle shaft.

7000 miles ago, I pumped a handful of grease into each boot, and the thumping noise went away.

My guess is that the grease mixed with whatever was left of the oil inside the boot, making a more sticky blend of lubricant.

Talking Found it!

After reading this thread and a few others under search/ thumping I crawled back under the car and found the end of the sway bar loose from the ball on the inside of the hub, it sure makes it easier to find the problem with experienced advice.
Thanks everybody!:p

Thumping on left rear came back

Its not the stripped caliper bolt, it is still making the noise right now, I really don't know what to look for? I will monitor thread if anybody find a solution, thumping noise on the left rear tire.

My 84 300d started making this loud thumping/banging noise from the rear of the car. The first time I heard I had to Pull over as I thought the rear was comming apart. I didn't see anything. After about 30 minutes of driving at 65-70mph it starts to make the noise. It does it in gear and while coasting in neutral at speed. I noticed a radial tear on the inside axel shaft boot 1/2 way around. there is also grease on the underside of the spare tire compartment. I'd like to see if any of you actually fixed this and what did you replace.

FWIW, last spring, someone hit-n-run to my 1980 240D. The driver's side rear was pushed in. The body shop did a nice job pulling it out, made sure the rear was relativey straight, the trunk lid could close, and the tail light worked once again. There were no noises at the time.

Friday evening, driving home, I noticed a loud thumping/banging noise from the rear of the car. The noise occurs at all speeds, It gets faster with speed, louder with more pedal, and has a rythym to it. However, if I take my foot off the accellerator, the noise stops, when I am coasting, no noises. I cannot feel anything unusual, no vibrations.

CV boots look intact, no noticeable leakage at the boots. I didn't get underneath far enough to check the sway bar link.

ebrake is firm when engaged, so I don't believe it is this.

I'm leaning towards replacing the CV/ half axles. I'm looking for a reasonsbly priced source.

Check your rear diff mount. Also when was the last time you replaced the diff fluids?
